Edgar Berlanga scored a convincing victory over Padraig McCrory last night. As a result, he has inched closer to his reported aim, a fight with Canelo Alvarez. Now, the Mexican icon might be ready for him. But by calling him out, is the Brooklyn-born boxer biting off more than he could chew?

A superlative performance from the NABO super middleweight champion saw the IBO light heavyweight champion’s camp throw in the towel in the sixth round. It is the twenty-second straight win for Berlanga. However, perhaps the most critical aspect of his win remains the fact that it has made him Alvarez’s WBA mandatory challenger. But is that a good enough guarantee to secure the much-vaunted bout? Probably even before the Berlanga-McCrory match took place, former champion Shawn Porter could foresee what might happen.

The fight between Edgar Berlanga and his Northern Irish opponent Padraig McCrory headlined the Matchroom-DAZN event at the Caribe Royal Orlando in Orlando, Florida. Other important fights included the ten-round fight between Andy Cruz and Brayan Zamarripa Rodriguez for the IBF International lightweight title. Right from the opening round, Berlanga applied vicious pressure on McCrory.

With some twenty seconds left for the sixth round to complete, back-to-back rights from Berlanga finally had McCrory touching the canvas. The Belfast-born boxer got up while the referee was still counting. However, his side could comprehend that his story was over.

During the post-fight press conference, one of the reporters asked, “If you couldn’t get Munguia, if you couldn’t get Canelo, would you consider him Morel for your next fight?” Edgar Berlanga replied, “No, we, uh, we we on the we on the something different right now. You know, I know they you know they gave us a WBA…you know, number one for the for the title but yeah, we want the bigger things. You know, we want Canelo.

But the former welterweight champion might not concur with the thought. According to him, irrespective of how well Edgar Berlanga comes out of the fight against Padraig McCrory, there’s only a slim chance of him getting the Canelo Alvarez fight.

The queue goes long

He said, “Edgar Berlanga ain’t gettin Canelo Alvarez, no matter how good he looks tonight.” Not surprisingly, many of the followers agreed with ‘Showtime’. While one user called ‘The Chosen One’ delusional, “Berlanga is delusional,” others found it crazy as to how such thoughts could even occur: “Facts ! Lol, Idk why they even think that.

Porter’s views probably spring from the bitter truth that Canelo Alvarez has yet to consent to a fight with WBC mandatory challenger David Benavidez. Among all the big names that have appeared against the undisputed super middleweight champion, his name carries the biggest weight. Terence Crawford‘s case still stands on a rickety ladder owing to the weight difference.

That leaves Jamie Munguia and Jermall Charlo. The former is the WBO’s number-one-ranked contender. Whereas the latter, a middleweight champion who came out of retirement last year. Thus, with so many, a last-line charge from Berlanga may hardly grab the Mexican icon’s attention.
