Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid, has yet to enter the ring after his standout performance last April. But notwithstanding his absence, he frequently makes headlines. Lately, a common theme, which his name frequently brushes against, remains the touchy revelations from old sparring sessions. The latest round reportedly involved Shawn Porter.
In the realm of lower-weight divisions, no other name resonates more thunderously than that of the WBA lightweight champion. Fans eagerly await his comeback. But they also fervently look forward to what he has to say, or rather, what he writes. A few days ago, he claimed what had reportedly happened while sparring with Shawn Porter. Expectedly, it roused a fair share of online wrangling, then back and forth. In his latest move, ‘Showtime’ seems to have taken up the cudgels to get the matter off his chest.

Don’t judge based on hearsay: Shawn Porter
The discussion came up exclusively on ‘ProBox TV’. The host and guests asked Porter for his take on the issue. Gervonta Davis, now also known as Abdul Wahid, posted a message on January 18. He said, “Now, ask Shawn this question. If I beat his a** in the gym and he was over 147lbs..why tf would I be scared to fight a mf w just a nose..s*it not adding up?”

‘Showtime’ recalled that he sparred with ‘Tank’ sometime before he faced Terence Crawford on November 20, 2021. But he also explained that when he joined the lightweight champion in the ring, the mindset was completely different.
So until a person saw it firsthand, it would be unfair on their part to judge and draw conclusions. More significantly, as old-school boxing envisages, what happens in a closed-door sparring session should stay there.
He shared, “I spar with Tank. I think the week before I fought Terence Crawford and and no excuses, but like I said, hey yo, I was going through my own and and you had to be there to understand what I mean by that if you weren’t there, hey is what it is: things that happen in camp stays in camp.”
However, he added how his natural curiosity picked up when he came across Gervonta Davis, who is now Abdul Wahid. He wanted to understand who this rising star of boxing was.
Davis praises Porter
‘Tank’ participated in the session with intense focus. So Shawn Porter’s first impressions of the lightweight champion aligned seamlessly with what he saw. Gervonta Davis, aka Abdul Wahid, came across an outstanding boxer who loves the sport. He knows both how to hit and how to accept punishing blows. “But at the same time when we got when I got in the ring with the kid, I’m like I want to see what this kid got; I want to see who who he is, you know, and he’s firing on all cylinders. You know what I mean? I saw exactly what I what I thought I would see. A tremendous boxer who can punch, who loves the game, who ain’t afraid to get hit, who ain’t afraid to get gritty, and the list goes on,” said Showtime.

According to Shawn Porter, the whole issue probably came up after his podcast, where he spoke about how the fight between ‘Tank’ and Devin Haney might not take place for the time being. However, he clarified that his point of contention was more from a business perspective.
