Will William Zepeda duck Shakur Stevenson, or is he ready to face the challenge head-on?

Shakur Stevenson has a new idea. To stage a Matchroom Boxing vs. Golden Boy Promotions. That’s not all. He wants to fight on the same bill and he has disclosed the name he would pick, William Zepeda. But unlike Matchroom Boxing’s past cards, the WBC champion believes in a change in fortune for his English boss.

Stevenson, 27, was scheduled to fight Joe Cordina but he had to bow out of the October 12 card because of a hand injury. So, the American fighter is recovering right now and already screening out his next opponents. But he has another idea for himself on the Matchroom vs. Golden Boy bill. He also predicted a win for his promotion and Eddie Hearn, who suffered a devastating 0-5 defeat to Queensberry in June, along with recent losses of top Matchroom fighters like Anthony Joshua and Dmitry Bivol.

Stevenson, 22-0, turned to his X handle and added the hypothetical fight on the potential Jaron Ennis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr fight card. He wrote, “A golden boy vs matchroom card would be insane.. Me vs Zepeda, Boots vs Vergil Ortiz we would come out on top but the idea sounds insane!!”

However, the speculative card depends on when the Newark native makes a comeback. But a fight with Zepeda could be on the cards, given the traction it might attract. Hearn, 45, has already disclosed his desire to fix a date involving the two in early 2025. But the British promoter also pointed out ‘Camaron’ might avoid a fight with Stevenson.

Eddie Hearn believes William Zepeda will duck Shakur Stevenson

Notably, Zepeda, 28, will fight Tevin Farmer on November 16 in Riyadh with the interim WBC title on the line. It might double as a tune-up fight for him against Shakur Stevenson. But the Matchroom Boxing lynchpin believes the title fight between Stevenson and Zepeda might not come to fruition still. He told Fight Hub TV, “In my opinion, Zepeda will duck Shakur.”

What’s your perspective on:

Will William Zepeda duck Shakur Stevenson, or is he ready to face the challenge head-on?

Hearn continued, “Listen, it’s his [William Zepeda] best shot right now. Shakur is coming off the hand operation, and he’s going to be coming straight back into the fight. Zepeda has got the warmup fight against Tevin Farmer. It’s a nice style to gear up for Shakur. I don’t think Oscar [De La Hoya] will do it. It’ll eat him up too bad.”

For Hearn, a fight with Zepeda will only help them, irrespective of the contrasting boxing styles of Stevenson and Zepeda. They are chasing a fight with Gervonta Davis and the path to that fight is tumultuous. But fighting Zepeda could help Stevenson get used to the style and then he could use the experience against ‘Tank’.
