Even though Shakur Stevenson just defended his WBC lightweight title a few days ago for the second time, the start of this year hasn’t been all smooth sailing. His win against Josh Padley raised a few eyebrows, especially since the Doncaster native was a last-minute replacement brought in after Floyd Schofield Jr. pulled out. But Shakur wasn’t fazed. His eyes were already set on a unification showdown with Gervonta Davis. But what if Davis doesn’t take the bait? Oh, but he did!
“To be honest, all of them guys,” confirmed the Baltimore native in a conversation with the NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith when Smith threw at him Shakur’s name. Now, it turns out Gervonta Davis wants the fight after all. If both camps make it official, we’ll soon be treated to a thrilling clash at lightweight. Predictions are already flying, and one of the most interesting comes from a man who knows the ropes—former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs.

Gervonta Davis is effective in later rounds, says Briggs
A lifelong New York native, Briggs is in Brooklyn at the moment to catch the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. fight at Barclays Center. While there, a reporter asked the 60-6 boxer for his prediction on the Lamont Roach Jr. vs. Gervonta Davis fight. “This ain’t going to be no easy fight,” the 53-year-old stated. However, Briggs leaned toward Gervonta Davis. Why? “On experience, undefeated,” ‘Shannon the Cannon’ stated. Then came the big question.

The reporter shifted the conversation to the possibility of a future showdown between Tank and Shakur, both of whom are in the 135 lb weight class and are champions. He asked whether or not His Excellency Turki Alalshikh had enough money to make the fight happen. Briggs confidently stated that Turki does have more than enough money and called the fight between Gervonta Davis and Stevenson “a huge fight. That’s the fight we want to see.” But who does he predict will take home the win?
When questioned who he favored in the potential fight, Briggs answered, “I like Tank off experience. And his strength.” And what about the Newark native? Shannon Briggs expressed doubts about Shakur Stevenson’s ability to withstand Tank’s punches, suggesting that Stevenson wouldn’t be able to defend effectively, especially in the later rounds. “He gonna break you,” remarked the former heavyweight champion confidently. Just like Shannon Briggs, Rolando Romero too thinks Gervonta Davis has a better chance at winning it than Shakur.
Rolly slams Shakur Stevenson
In a recent chat with FightHype.com, Rolly Romero didn’t hold back when discussing Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson. The reporter mentioned how guys like Gervonta Davis might need to move up to 147 lbs for bigger paydays, but Rolly wasn’t buying it. He basically told Tank Davis to stay in his lane—he’s already proven himself at 140 lbs, so why move up? “There’s no point in him going up. He already proved he could win a world title at 140lbs,” stated the 16-2 boxer. Here, he was referring to Tank’s TKO victory over Mario Barrios in 2021.

Then, the conversation shifted to Shakur Stevenson, and Rolly didn’t sugarcoat his opinions. He called out Shakur’s style, pointing out how he danced around the ring against a puncher like Edwin De Los Santos, which made Rolly question if Shakur would be able to handle someone as explosive as Gervonta Davis. “Shakur jumped around the ring like a grasshopper with De Los Santos,” he stated mockingly. Rolly went further, stating, “He just likes to touch men over and over again. Boxing is something intimate to him.”

Romero gave the WBC lightweight champion the credit for being a technical genius but said he was wasting his potential by not going for the knockout. He posited, “If Shakur can get three knockouts straight,” maybe a fight with Gervonta would be worth it. Until then? Not so much.
