Shakur Stevenson dropped a bombshell on the boxing world by announcing his retirement on X. The New Jersey native has maintained an impeccable record with 21 consecutive wins, including 10 KO’s. He also had recently secured the WBC world lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Edwin De Los Santos.
This unexpected retirement decision left fans and the boxing community speculating about the reasons behind Stevenson’s abrupt exit from the sport. Moreover, this also raises the question if Stevenson would ever come back inside the ring after such a huge decision in his life.

Shakur Stevenson, the undefeated WBC lightweight champion, has expressed his eagerness to return from retirement for an enticing bout. Following his recent match, securing fights with notable names in the 135 and 140 weight classes had become very challenging for Stevenson.
However, he anticipates that Emanuel Navarrete or Vasily Lomachenko might seek a unification match against him once one of them claims titles at 135. He said, “I just got to stay focused and hopefully wait until an opportunity shows up that makes me get up and get out of my seat and and come out of retirement, you know.”
Stevenson understands that if any fighter would want to strive for the undisputed title, they’ll have to eventually face him as he is the WBC title holder in the lightweight division. Safe to say, he’s waiting for his time now, since he’s still not vacated his title. But what led him to come to the decision of retirement?
Stevenson would rather retire than be in the “weak” boxing game
At the start of 2024, Shakur Stevenson found himself without a scheduled bout. He voiced his frustration to fellow boxers like Vasyl Lomachenko, accusing them of avoiding him. The situation escalated when the WBO mandated a fight for the vacant lightweight title at 135 pounds between Emanuel Navarrete and Denys Berinchyk.

Interestingly, Stevenson was negotiating a fight against Emanuel Navarrete already. After the announcement of the aforementioned fight, Stevenson posted on the X that he was taking a retirement from the sport. He wrote, “I’m officially retiring from the sport of boxing. I’ll be in the gym forever perfecting my craft and helping the next generation become great and chase they dreams but I ain’t fw this weak boxing game.”
