This might be one of those rare moments when Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson actually agree on something. Earlier this month, the WBA lightweight champion stepped into the ring against Lamont Roach Jr. in New York, expecting a routine victory. But Roach had other plans. Despite Davis being the heavy favorite, the WBA super featherweight champion gave him all he could handle, pushing the fight to a stunning majority draw. But the fight came with a one-plus-one controversy bonanza. While the decision was controversial because many thought Roach Jr. had done enough, Davis’ no-knockdown ruling during the ninth round by referee Steve Willis made headlines for days after the fight. The New York State Athletic Commission had to step in to uphold the decision despite a request from Roach Jr. to overturn it.
Regardless, the damage to Davis’ image from the ordeal wasn’t the only hit the Baltimore native took. A couple of days ago, The Ring, owned by the architect of the Riyadh Season Turki Alalshikh, updated their pound-for-pound rankings. Davis, who previously occupied the 8th spot on the list, was shown the door. And ‘Interim’ WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez was welcomed on the 10th spot.
Given the rivalry between Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis, one would think Stevenson would celebrate this news, but nah. You see, while Davis was removed, Stevenson was never added to the list despite being one of the biggest names not only in the lightweight division but also in the sport overall. So, he reacted to the update on X with disapproval, posting, “👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾.”

Stevenson and Davis have been on a collision course for a potential fight against each other for years now, but it has never come close to happening. While Stevenson remains open to a fight, Davis seems uninterested. However, that hasn’t stopped people from sharing their predictions for the potential fight.

Have an interesting take?
Despite criticism of both fighters’ outings, Lopez remains confident in Davis’s abilities. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the WBO super-lightweight champion predicted a victory for ‘Tank’ in a potential clash with Stevenson. “I still think Gervonta will win against Shakur. Technically I just think like that,” Lopez stated. However, Davis first needs to worry about a rematch with Roach Jr.

That said, it appears Shakur Stevenson is willing to put aside his differences with Gervonta Davis to advocate against Davis’ removal from the pound-for-pound list. But would he have done the same if he had been included in the list?
