WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and two-weight undisputed champion Terence Crawford have been long-time friends. They are often seen supporting each other both in and outside the ring. However, there’s one thing the brothers from different mothers can’t seem to agree on. What? The whole Errol Spence Jr. Hall of Fame drama Crawford kicked off a few days ago! 

If you haven’t been keeping up with boxing lately, Crawford recently appeared on the Pound 4 Pound podcast with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo. There he made some controversial comments about his former rival ‘The Truth.’ According to ‘Bud,’ Spence Jr. doesn’t stand a chance of being inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. Crawford points to the accolades he currently possesses as a reason. 

He justified his claims by suggesting that Spence only fought in one division. Crawford acknowledged Spence’s accomplishment in unifying the IBF, WBC, and WBA welterweight belts, as well as his victories against top fighters in the division. But he also claimed it wasn’t enough to get him into the BHOF. The pair fought on July 29, 2023, with Crawford dominating Spence to become the undisputed welterweight champion.

Regardless, this started a whirlwind of backlash on social media. Fans and boxing experts united in opposition to Crawford’s statement, reinforcing Spence Jr.’s case for the BHOF. While Spence Jr. has yet to respond, Shakur Stevenson has weighed in on whether he deserves a spot.

When reminded about Crawford’s comments during a recent interview with Best Women’s Boxing Show, Stevenson said, “I disagree.” He explained his point of view, stating, “I feel as though Errol had a great career. If it wasn’t for Bud, he would’ve been undisputed. So he went and got every belt one by one by one. I think he’s a hall of famer.”

Putting the Hall of Fame drama aside, fans might soon see Errol Spence Jr. return to the ring

Oscar De La Hoya wants Errol Spence Jr. to fight this boxer

Oscar De La Hoya believes Vergil Ortiz Jr. is ready for a major step up in his career and wants Errol Spence Jr. to fight him. Ortiz, who remains undefeated, has proven his ability at the top level, most recently defeating Serhii Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov. De La Hoya sees a bright future for Ortiz, stating, “There’s a lot of options out there for Vergil. I’m excited.” 

One fight that De La Hoya has in mind is a Texas showdown between Ortiz and Spence, which he believes would be huge both financially and for the sport. “Imagine if we can put together a [Errol] Spence vs. Vergil fight in Dallas stadium,” De La Hoya said. While Spence has been sidelined since his loss to Terence Crawford, De La Hoya is still hopeful, adding, “That’s something to consider.” 

At this point, it seems no one agrees with Terence Crawford’s stance on Errol Spence Jr.’s Hall of Fame credentials. Even his long-time friend and one of his biggest supporters, Shakur Stevenson, can’t bring himself to agree with Crawford. Do you agree with Stevenson or Crawford?
