On Sunday, William Zepeda withdrew himself from his upcoming fight on February 22, 2025, putting Shakur Stevenson’s return to the ring in jeopardy. The no.1 rated contender suffered a major wrist injury against Tevin Farmer on November 16 in Saudi Arabia. The injury proved costly, as Zepeda had to opt out of the fight.
Things were looking grim for Stevenson’s return to the ring, who last fought in July this year, against Artem Harutyunyan. However, undefeated rising star, Floyd Schofield jumped on the opportunity and volunteered to be the opponent for the WBC World Lightweight champion. It looks like it worked, as reports have emerged stating the talks are progressing for the match.

It feels like a desperate move, but according to a boxing reporter, Dan Rafael, Shakur Stevenson’s team has made an offer to ‘Kid Austin’ for a fight on February 22. Looks like Golden Boy Promotions wants the match on the same date as the scheduled Zepeda fight, which can mean the venue will also be the same. Rafael took to his ‘X’ and wrote, “Offer has been made by @ShakurStevenson team for a fight with @KidAustin11 for Feb. 22. #boxing,” indicating that the talks are progressing.

The negotiations should not be a big problem, considering Golden Boy Promtons represent both fighters. Furthermore, a few days ago, Kid Austin and his father revealed they had accepted the percentage of money for the fight.
However, even after swift negotiations, it must have been a hard decision for Oscar De La Hoya, as this fight might not attract the same audience as the Zepeda fight. Schofield made his professional debut just 4 years ago and is still a slightly unknown commodity in the sport. It could automatically make this fight considerably less appealing.
Fans and experts are also concerned about ‘Kid Austin’s lack of experience in front of Shakur Stevenson. However, the 22-year-old and his father/trainer did not care much about it and promised a landmark victory.

Shakur Stevenson’s experience is irrelevant
While talking to Cigar Talk, the Jersey City native assured the fans about his victory. He stated, “Basically, I know I’m going to win,” in a confident tone. However, the 22-year-old made it evident he does not want to disrespect Shakur Stevenson and “don’t want to talk too much crap on him because the fight is somewhat made.”
He further added he is confident in himself and will dedicate the bout for his newborn son and his father. “I am confident in myself, I work hard, and I am fighting for my son and my dad. I’ve got something to fight for,” stated Kid Austin.

He further stated he doesn’t want to do any trash-talking and will do his “talking in the ring. If I sense it’s for the build-up, I’ll probably mess around.” It looks like he will now finally get the chance to prove himself against the world’s best.
