Is Oscar De La Hoya protecting his fighters from Shakur Stevenson, or is it just bad luck?

Shakur Stevenson has been unlucky, to say the least, this year. Be it in the matter of fights or about hunting down capable opponents. But when it finally seemed to be going his way, his fate took another turn, and the American boxer is back to square one. However, Floyd Schofield wants to come to the rescue.

Stevenson, 27, looked set to book a February 22 date with William Zepeda for his WBC lightweight title defense. But the challenger had to pull out of the contest with a hand injury, which the latter sustained during his fight with Tevin Farmer. Again, leaving him hanging. But Schofield, 22, another fighter in Oscar De La Hoya‘s stable, inserted himself into the title frame as he declared, “@ShakurStevenson you said if Zepeda ducks you we are next. I sent Eric Gomez an email asking him to let us fill in.”

Stevenson, at 22-0, promptly accepted the challenge and tagged the Golden Boy Promotions lynchpin to contact HE Turki Alalshikh to set up the fight. He took to his X handle and wrote, “Cmon I’m down Feb 22 let’s do it tell Oscar let’s get it done.. Is Oscar gone let u fight me or he gone bluff me like he did wit your stable mate?? @OscarDeLaHoya Reach out to Turki let’s get this going 😈.”

The Newark native soon expressed his skepticism with Schofield, as he hit him back with a scathing response. He noted, “Don’t social media bluff either lil mf come see if u can swim with the sharks!!!” In a separate post, Stevenson threw a jibe at all the lightweight prospects who called him out, but their promoters wouldn’t allow them to pursue a fight with him. Interestingly, if this fight doesn’t go through, the WBC champion already has set his eyes on a big name.

Shakur Stevenson: a change in dance partner

Stevenson engaged in a heated exchange with George Kambosos Jr. after the latter signed with Matchroom Boxing. Both are now under the same banner, but Kambosos Jr. is fighting at 140, which could affect their negotiations. This rationality didn’t deter the two, as Kambosos Jr. threatened to “break” the champion’s “brittle hands” in February. In another post, the Australian fighter penned, “Come see me FEB in Australia the stage is already set drop your belt let Zepeda become email chump. And see me at 140.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Oscar De La Hoya protecting his fighters from Shakur Stevenson, or is it just bad luck?

Have an interesting take?

It remains to be seen whether a fight between the two could be possible. It all hinges on Eddie Hearn and the agreed weight class between the two. What about ‘Austin Kid’ Schofield? The lightweight prospect is only 22 and still molding himself into a better boxer. So, it’s highly unlikely that Golden Boy Promotions will throw him to Stevenson. This scenario might again leave Stevenson without a competitor.
