A year after losing the trilogy fight to Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder got some of his flairs by packing up Robert Helenius in the first round of their meet on October 15. However, the post-fight press conference remains remarkable for how he turned emotional mentioning boxers who received debilitating injuries. One name he took was that of Prichard Colon, the Puerto Rican – American boxer who collapsed after a fight in 2015 due to a severe head injury. Now his friend, Errol Spence Jr., took the turn to pay respects to Colon, undergoing rehabilitation in Florida. The thirty-three-year-old southpaw would take on archrival Terence Crawford on July 29 at T Mobile Arena.

Errol Spence Jr. shared a pic of Prichard Colon through his Instagram story. After an eventful amateur stretch, Maitland, Florida-born Prichard Colon Melendez, turned professional in 2013. He remained unbeatable for the next two years. Starting with three bouts in his debuting year, Colon fought seven times in 2014. In 2015, he had already participated in four matches and took on Terrel Williams, his fifth on October 17.

Initially, he had started well but Williams consistently targeted the back of his head. Though Colon complained, it proved to be of no avail. Instead, he received a two-point deduction for a low blow. During the ninth round, Prichard Colon went down reportedly because of the continuous hits he received on the back of his head. He informed the ring doctor of feeling dizzy but believed he could continue. The doctor also gave his green signal to go ahead.

Finally, the referee disqualified Colon when his corner, on an erroneous assumption, started removing the gloves. Post-fight, he started vomiting. Physicians discovered bleeding in his brain once he got admitted to the hospital. For the next 221 days, the boxer remained in a coma. Initially treated at Virginia’s Inova Fairfax Hospital, Prichard Colon moved to Shepherd Center in Atlanta. There he came out of the coma and began the rehabilitation program. Later Colon moved to his mother’s place in Orlando, Florida.
