“Not very professional, & definitely not a good look.” Rick Glaser‘s comments reflected what most of the boxing community thought when Curmel Moton hit the weighing scales. Instead of making a statement, he ended up evoking gaps. After all, he had come on a whopping 15 pounds overweight. Not only did it derail his fight, but it also raised many questions about his attitude. But it seems misery is only piling up on him.
Moton, 18, had geared up to face Bryan Mercado at ACX1 Studios in a catchweight of 133 pounds. However, he ended up registering a weight of 148.7 pounds instead. How could the American fighter, who had been disciplined throughout, suddenly abandon his revered principle? He explained in a statement that the New Jersey Athletic Control Board had lost his blood work in their system. As a result, his fight wouldn’t have been sanctioned.
The Salt Lake City native declared, “I’ve been going back and forth with the commission about my bloodwork passing, and as of right now, they lost my blood in their system. I’ve known this for the past three days. So, there was no point in killing myself to make weight.” For him, the fight was off the table. And so he didn’t attempt to make the weight. However, Moton contended that the commission pushed him to make the weight, which they later used as an excuse to call off the fight.

Still only 6 fights into his career, the Mayweather Promotions prodigy needs time to self-reflect and come back stronger. Whereas Danny Garcia, who promotes Mercado, has labeled the situation as a product of miscommunication.

Danny Garcia comes clean on the Curmel Moton situation
In a conversation with Fight Hype, Garcia, 36, disclosed how the fight had been called off. He admitted he believed that Moton would try to make the weight, irrespective of the blood work, and then wait for further clarification. Meanwhile, according to the former world champion, Moton thought the fight was off after the commission lost his blood work, and therefore, he didn’t make any attempt to make the weight.
What’s your perspective on:
Is the NJACB's indefinite suspension of Curmel Moton justified, or an overreaction to a young fighter's mistake?
Have an interesting take?
Garcia said, “It was just a miscommunication. I think that’s all it was, you know… So, I don’t want the fans to think that he just didn’t try or anything like that. Because at the end of the day, we’re a new promoter. He’s a young fighter, and it’s probably just a miscommunication. That’s pretty much what it was.”
