His title ambitions were on the line, and a win could ensure a title shot next. But the American boxer failed to rise to the occasion as he tasted defeat at the hands of David Jimenez on the Haney vs. Garcia undercard.

The signs were ominous for Ramirez as he went almost down on the floor in the very few initial seconds of the fight. Jimenez’s quick pair of hands, elusive nature, and experience spelled trouble for Ramirez. Ramirez slowly started feeling the fight and was putting his forehead into his opponent’s chest, frustrating him and digging the fight. He made a rebound in the first round, winning the rounds on the back of his accurate jabs. But he lost the second round as he found himself on the receiving end of some heavy uppercuts.

The fight was mostly fought in close quarters and clinches, where Jimenez prevailed, pushing forward and showcasing his grappling skills. Meanwhile, Ramirez relied on counterpunches, landing clean and accurate shots. He won the third round also, despite less activity. However, his face showed signs of beating.

In the fourth round, Jimenez bullied Ramirez, forcing the bout on the ropes, employing the rough tactic of getting inside and getting dirty. He won the round with his dirty tactics. He continued with the same in the fifth round, but Ramirez tried to maintain the distance, and it seemed to be his best tactic to bag the win. However, Jimenez’s dogfight tactics won him consecutive rounds, as he led the fight by the end of the 7th round. The big moment of the fight came in the seventh round, as Ramirez’s jabs rocked Jimenez and made him fall to his knees. But that was not enough to win him the round.

In the 8th and 9th rounds also, Jimenez’s body punches, his inside fighting, and Ramirez’s bloody face did the job for him. He would jump into the round, throw an 8-9 punch combo, and then fight inside. He was happily absorbing three punches to land many of his in the 9th round and seemed relentless in his approach. By the middle of the 10th round, Jimenez had landed 140 punches, compared to Ramirez’s 120. But he dropped the 10th round.

In the championship rounds, Ramirez didn’t assume the pace of the fighting. It was again Jimenez, who controlled the pace, was quick on his feet, and pushed Ramirez on the ropes. He landed body shots and uppercuts, pushing the limits of Ramirez, and opening a new cut on Ramirez’s face in the final round. Ramirez’s work paid off as he exited the Barclays Center as the new WBA interim super flyweight champion.
