Father of David Benavidez, Jose Benavidez Sr. has now publicly criticized Canelo Alvarez over his last fight with John Ryder. In his opinion, on the 6th of May, Alvarez, failing to stop Ryder within the first five rounds, displayed a lack of determination, ferocity, and power. Likewise, Benavidez Sr. has claimed that Alvarez has failed to prove that he is “going to be around for a while“. Although Canelo is still young, Benavidez Sr. is of the view that the former is no longer the boxer “we saw four fights ago“.

As per the unified welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr., Alvarez should next fight David Benavidez. However, the father of Benavidez feels Canelo no longer possesses “that fire” and “that power to hurt an opponent and finish him“. In his recent interview, Jose Benavidez Sr. expressed what made him think Canelo was now on the decline.

According to Jose Benavidez Sr., Alvarez has reached the final stage of his career and likewise, his body no longer responds the same. The fact that Alvarez did not go for the stoppage, for Benavidez Sr., is proof that Alvarez is finally worn out from the “many wars” he’s had. “I was thinking that Canelo would stop Ryder within four or five rounds, but I think he didn’t go for the stoppage, and Ryder escaped alive,” stated Jose Benavidez Sr. One would realize that this view is synonymous with that expressed earlier by Ryder.

After the bout with Alvarez, Ryder declared that Canelo failed to execute his initial plan and said, “He’s probably past his best.” In a very similar tone, now Jose Benavidez Sr. has stated, “I think that he got tired, that he doesn’t have that extra gear, that fire, that power to hurt an opponent and finish him like the Canelo of the past did.” In addition, he spoke about Alvarez making the fight against Ryder harder than it should have been. In his opinion, despite landing “good shots“, he could not hurt Ryder “to the extent of putting him out“.
