When Ryan Garcia stood on the scales, the weight tipped over 3.2 pounds over the limit of 140. The American boxer failed to tilt the scales in his favor, and it has proved a costly affair for him as he has to shell out $1.5 million for failing to keep his promise. That’s not it. Some clouds of uncertainty also hovered over his fight against Devin Haney.
‘KingRy’s shenanigans continued as he removed his shirt and chugged down what appeared to be an intoxicant on the stage after missing the weight. “100 Percent worth it,” he declared as he shared a clip on his social media handle. His weight miss ensured that he lost the bet that he made with ‘The Dream’ on Thursday’s press conference. Both had agreed that either of the boxers who came in overweight would pay the other $500k per pound. That means Garcia owned Haney $1.5 million before the fight started. Not only that, Garcia, 25, lost the privilege of fighting for the WBC strap at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 20. So, what’s the situation now?

TalkSports’ Michael Benson referred to Dan Rafael’s comments as he specified that Haney had made the weight. However, as Garcia failed to do so, he owed the champion $1.5 million. In addition, both camps were negotiating a deal to proceed with the fight, but Haney’s WBC gold wouldn’t be on the line.

“Camps now renegotiating a deal for the fight to proceed, but Garcia will be unable to win Haney’s WBC super-lightweight world title,” Benson wrote. After missing the weight, Garcia, at 24-1, has said, “I did my best to make this weight. I put myself through hell.”
Meanwhile, he also clarified that he had apple juice and sparkling water before putting on a show pretending to have an intoxicant. “Apple Juice and sparkling water HEHE,” the California native admitted. Amid these antics and missed weight, the fans were wondering whether the fight was still scheduled and the main event was still on.

Is Haney vs. Garcia still happening?
Garcia later joked that his weight miss could be attributed to him carrying the burden of the fight’s promotion. He wrote on his X handle, “My b*lls got too heavy. And back gained too much muscle from carrying the promo. And my fingers got stronger from all the tweets damn.”
Golden Boy Promotions has put the rumors to rest and, in an official statement, specified that Garcia had paid Haney the amount. The champion, at 31-0, has also declared that Garcia has “honored” the promise and the fight will proceed as Garcia has paid the price of his own mistake.
