The boxing fraternity hasn’t taken the news of Showtime Boxing’s shutdown well. After 37 years, Showtime’s partnership with professional boxing is ending. Paramount will close Showtime Sports at the end of 2023. Showtime Sports aired its first boxing match in 1986. It featured Hagler and John Mugabi in Las Vegas. Soon Showtime and HBO became quick rivals, both broadcasting top-tier boxing matches.

In 1990, Showtime surprisingly took Tyson from HBO with an exclusive pay-per-view deal. Furthermore, in 2013, they also signed Floyd Mayweather from HBO. Mayweather had seven pay-per-view fights on Showtime, including big matches in 2015 and 2017. Thus, when such a mammoth corporation calls quits it raises a lot of questions about the changing landscape of boxing. Where the boxing arena and fans are still trying to make sense of Showtime’s cessation, Teofimo Lopez has an uncanny opinion. In his recent post, he was seen predicting the closure of DAZN, another renowned streaming platform.

In his recent tweet, Teofimo predicted that DAZN will exit boxing in three years. He thinks they might last five years only to minimize damage. He uses the hashtag #TheTakeover to emphasize his point. Lopez tweets, I give DAZN no more than 3 years left in Boxing. Maybe 5 just to prolong the damage! #TheTakeover”

This tweet, in turn, grabbed the attention of the CEO of DAZN. He was quick to express his opinion about the jab taken by Lopez. Joe Markowski, the CEO of DAZN, says he sometimes doesn’t understand the sport of boxing. As he writes, “Sometimes I really don’t understand this sport.” On the surface, he’s expressing confusion or bewilderment about the sport. The underlying meaning could be more complex. He might be alluding to the unpredictability of the boxing industry, where opinions and fortunes can change rapidly.

Not only, Joe, but even Ryan Garcia was quick to point out the fallacy of such an opinion by Lopez. Ryan Garcia is telling Teofimo Lopez that no boxer should hope for a company in the boxing industry to fail. ‘King Ry’ writes, “No boxer should wish the downfall for any company involved in boxing.”

On the surface, he’s advocating for unity and support within the boxing community. Garcia may be suggesting that wishing for the downfall of a company like DAZN is counterproductive for the sport as a whole. This is because companies like DAZN provide platforms for boxers to showcase their talent and earn money. If such companies fail, it could have a ripple effect, negatively impacting opportunities for all boxers. Therefore, Garcia’s statement serves as a call for solidarity and mutual support in the boxing industry.
