Each generation of boxing revolves around a few names. If you were born during the 1980s, you would have been raised to the stories of the original 4 kings of boxing–Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, and Marvin Hagler. If you are a 21st-century boxing fan, then you must be fascinated by the likes of Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis, who have tilted the boxing world with their star power. But there is a staggering concern with these modern, famed boxers. It’s an era of fewer fights, less activity, and higher payouts.
Ade Oladipo tried to come up with a modern equivalent of 4 kings of boxing when he also roped in Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney. They all have the fanfare, and skills and are about to hit or have already hit their prime years as boxers. However, as suggested by the London resident, they underserve the fans by not fighting twice or three times a year.
It’s unlike the old generation, where boxers took consecutive fights throughout the years. While you could argue Canelo Alvarez is the last of the specimens, the modern boxers take a long break in between fight camps and fail to cater to fans’ needs and demands.

So, Oladipo said in a conversation with Ariel Helwani, “These guys should all be fighting two, three times a year. Boxing could be so big in America if these superstars, and they are superstars, stayed active, and unfortunately, we’re not getting activity from them.” These comments didn’t sit well with ‘KingRy,’ who turned to the comment section and refuted his claim. He wrote, “I have fought two already! So I’m trying to do my part!!! Can’t deny that.”
Interestingly, Garcia, 26, has already fought two fighters on the list made by Oladipo. The fans remember him taking a brutal KO loss from ‘Tank’ last year, but they also vividly remember him beating down Haney, 25, this year. What’s more?
Garcia has an exhibition lined up with Rukiya Anpo this December 30. Making him the only other fight among the 4 to grace the ring twice in this calendar year. The only other being Lopez. That’s not it. There are rumors that the two will fight next year, too. But can the same be said about Davis, 30, and Haney?

Do the rest make the cut alongside Ryan Garcia?
Elie Seckbach of ES NEWS disputed the inclusion of Haney, at 34-0, on the list. Why? According to him, the latter lost to Vasyl Lomachenko and received a beatdown from Garcia, too. Thus, eroding his credibility. He commented, “Devin can’t be part of this – I thought he lost to Loma and ryan beat him so bad…”
When it comes to Davis, at 30-0, he has only fought four times in the last 3 years. Despite him being hailed as the successor to Alvarez as the ‘face of boxing’. While he could return next year in the ring, he has recently gathered criticism for not fighting the best in the division.

The fans have levied the same claim against Lopez. The fans have demanded for a long time for all these fighters to fight each other and give them some memorable fights. It remains to be seen whether it will happen anytime soon.
