Vergil Ortiz Jr. had his hand raised when he went to war with Serhii Bohachuk. The fight produced high-voltage action from the first bell and the flurry of punches didn’t stop till the end. However, the American fighter took a knee twice in the fight but still left the arena as a victor. That’s something that hasn’t sat down well with some fans and Ryan Garcia is one of them.
Garcia, 26, has been vocal about what he saw in the fight and strongly believes the judges had it wrong. Bohachuk, 29, had declared, “People [who] saw this fight today and who understand boxing know what happened today… I make two knockdowns. Come on, guys.” So, when Oscar De La Hoya turned to his X handle and shared CompuBox data of punches thrown, ‘KingRy’ dropped to the comment section.
The CompuBox data suggested that Ortiz Jr., 26, had outboxed Bohachuk on the parameters of total punches thrown and power punches. But the Ukrainian boxer was more precise and accurate and had landed more jabs. De La Hoya’s post read, “You don’t know sh*t about boxing!! And the new!!!!!! @VergilOrtiz.”

Garcia, at 24-1-1, then asked that the Golden Boy Promotion lynchpin stop spreading such posts, casting doubt on the use of CompuBox to decide on the victor. He commented, “Stop this madness you know compubox doesn’t mean someone won.”

It has been a while since Garcia and Ortiz Jr., at 22-0, were at loggerheads. The Victorville native has called out Ortiz Jr. on multiple occasions, and the friction between the two only increased after the Bohachuk fight. He even dug up the past and reminded the fans that he had never lost to Ortiz Jr., even in sparring.

Is Ryan Garcia right to call out Oscar De La Hoya over Vergil Ortiz Jr.?
Have an interesting take?
Garcia had gone off on a rant when Ortiz Jr. emerged victorious after he turned around the fight in the later rounds. The lightweight boxer declared, “Yall understand I’ve never lost to Vergil Ortiz.” He added, “That’s just facts. Not one time has he beat me. So don’t even try to play with me.”
Despite the brewing rivalry between the two, the fans might have to wait for a while before the two ever match inside the ring. While Garcia undergoes his year-long ban for PED abuse, Ortiz Jr. finds himself in a position to challenge Terence Crawford next. He is in the top names to face ‘Bud’ next, according to HE Turki Alalshikh. And with the interim WBC super welterweight title around his waist, he can also challenge the winner of Sebastian Fundora vs. Errol Spence Jr.
