David Benavidez might be just twenty days away from his title clash against David Morrell. But the Canelo question still continues to haunt him. The Phoenix, Arizona-born ‘Mexican Monster’ will meet Morrell for a highly anticipated clash on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena. A win on the PBC-Amazon Prime card may prove a game-changer.
Three weeks after the Benavidez-Morrell match, Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol will meet in Riyadh for a rematch. There’s a chance the winner could end up facing either Benavidez or Morrell. It’s a fight Benavidez wouldn’t want to lose. With Canelo Alvarez shifting goalposts, his attempts to stake a claim at super middleweight glory faltered. To fight Benavidez, the Mexican superstar reportedly demanded a $200 million purse. It seems to have come down to $150 million. Will a fight ever take place? Fans still wonder. For the time being, it might astonish them how Benavidez and Alvarez came close to sparring for real.

Benavidez was speaking with Steven Cureno III on ‘K.O.Artist Sports.’ Towards the end, the boxing journalist asked, “I believe there was a point where you were supposed to spar Canelo. I don’t know if it was for Triple G, but then, like, it didn’t work out. You ended up sparring with Triple G. Just kind of lastly, tell me that story.”

According to ‘The Mexican Monster,’ the super middleweight champion made the ‘smartest decision ever’ by choosing not to spar with him. He recalled the sparring session with Gennady Golovkin. It appears the incident took place around the time ‘Triple G’ and Canelo Alvarez were engaged in their series of fights. Following the 2017 duel that ended in a draw, the duo regrouped for a rematch next year. The series finally culminated in the lackluster 2022 trilogy.
Reportedly, while still a teenager, to hone his skills, David Benavidez used to spar with some of the well-known names in boxing. So Benavidez shared that he received a call from Team Canelo. They had a few concerns: if young David sparred with Canelo Alvarez, ahead of the fight he might spill the beans to Golovkin.
“We know you’re sparring GGG…We don’t want you to give our secrets away,” recalled Benavidez. Cureno checked whether he regretted losing such a great opportunity. “No,” replied Benavidez, further adding, “If I would have sparred him…he would never want to fight me because he would see what level I’m at.”
Without sounding cocky, he wanted to state the facts as they were, David Benavidez revealed. Later, he emphasized how much he enjoyed and benefited from sparring with Gennady Golovkin, showering praise on the former world champion.

The challenging predicaments surrounding the fight
Canelo Alvarez has already faced scrutiny for naming a price to entice fights against David Benavidez and Terence Crawford. Meanwhile, rumors are swirling about his upcoming Cinco de Mayo bout. With Benavidez moving up to 175 pounds, the situation has grown more complicated. Even if Alvarez agrees, will he join Benavidez for a light heavyweight showdown, or will he expect the Arizona-born fighter to meet him at a lower weight instead?
Fans still clamor for this dream matchup. Yet, as things stand, the two fighters seem to be drifting further apart rather than moving closer to delivering a historic clash that would be remembered for years to come.
