Can Edgar Berlanga really outsmart Canelo Alvarez with Roy Jones Jr.'s advice, or is it a long shot?

Edgar Berlanga loves to go on an onslaught, put his opponents on the back foot, and then pull a flurry of punches to finish the fight. But he can’t do the same when he steps inside the boxing ring against the face of boxing, Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican champion has fought fighters of all sizes and styles. So, how can the challenger puzzle him and break him down? Roy Jones Jr. has the answer.

Berlanga, 27, will challenge Alvarez, 34, for the unified super middleweight crown on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena. Like any other fighter, the American fighter will enter the squared circle as an underdog and will be mulling over his strategy to hand him the third defeat of his career. While he has power and an explosive fighting style, he lacks the experience and boxing prowess that the champion possesses.

When Roy Jones. Jr. sat down with Fight Hub TV, he tactically broke down the fight. In addition, when asked to corner Berlanga, at 22-0, he also issued him some pointers. The first was to look for the left hooks to the face and the body. But the more important was the second one. The former world champion asked him to be aggressive and try to put Alvarez, at 61-2-2, under pressure and into a defensive stance. Because if the reverse happened, the night would be short and painful.

Jones Jr., 55, said, “To go out there and put Canelo on the defense and use your feints and keep Canelo on the defense. Don’t let Canelo put you on the defense. Because if he does, you’re gonna be in for a short night.”

It remains to be seen whether Berlanga has the acumen and ability to absorb the pressure of the big fight and stick to the game plan and Jones Jr.’s. However, if Caleb Plant is to be believed, ‘The Chosen One’ lacks the qualities to beat Alvarez.

‘Sweethands,’ in a conversation with BoxingScene, shed light on the realistic chances of Berlanga defeating Alvarez. He also pointed out how the Brooklyn native lacked the skills, IQ, and chin to triumph over the super middleweight champion. But Plant, 32, also asked him to prove him wrong.

He declared, “I don’t feel like [Edgar Berlanga beats Canelo Alvarez]. He doesn’t have the boxing skills, IQ, or chin. That’s a recipe for disaster, but let him prove us wrong and show what he can do.” Plant, at 22-2, has fought Alvarez, and knows how difficult it is to pull off a win against Canelo. While Berlanga has complete faith in himself, the fight might pan out differently.
