Why did Rolando Romero jump ship and abandon Ryan Garcia? That’s a question that has troubled fans ever since the champion announced a fight with Isaac Cruz, while being in talks with ‘KingRy’ for a long time. He now defends his super lightweight title against Cruz on March 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, it seems there is more to the story than lies and money.

‘Rolly Romero’ opened up on what made him change his mind as he switched to ‘Pitbull’ Cruz from Garcia. While he revealed he had a “bullsh*t” offer on the table from Oscar De La Hoya, he also believed a “difficult” fight with Cruz was a better fit for him.

The American champion wants the critics and fans to realize that he picked a tougher fight for less money. Romero told Fight Hub TV, “I decided to take a much more difficult fight than Ryan Garcia for less money. But people want to f*cking bash me for taking a more difficult fight. I mean, I would say Pitbull Cruz is a more difficult fighter than Ryan Garcia. Wouldn’t you agree?”

The 29-year-old champion listed Pitbull Cruz’s durability as something that sets him apart from Garcia. Likewise, he drew parallels with both fighters’ bout with Gervonta Davis, where Garcia took a knee and had a dismal performance.“He is much more durable. He punches; he is aggressive,” Romero added.

While the 15-1 record holder has looked past Garcia for this fight, he is keen to face him in the future. But what exactly happened at the negotiation table that derailed a fight between the two?
