Amidst the loud noises crisscrossing boxing, finally a sagacious appeal. David Benavidez reminded Canelo Alvarez what a fight between them would turn out to be. It will be a duel of epic proportions. He sounded prepared, not sure whether the Mexican superstar would pay heed. He has reasons of his own now. Confusion swept through when news of the Terence Crawford matchup caving in and prospects of a Jake Paul clash surfaced.

Potentially putting the mega fight with Crawford back on track, subsequent details suggested that the super middleweight king has now agreed to a four-fight deal with the Riyadh Season. Going by the information, which for the time being could be deemed mere speculation, the chances of Canelo and ‘The Mexican Monster’ stepping into the ring for a dance appear unlikely, at least till October 2026. But as Benavidez suggested, if they ever exchanged jabs, the day will forever be etched in Mexico’s rich boxing history. Will Canelo set aside his earlier demands of $200 million to chase greater boxing glory?

David Benavidez on what’s most needed right now

Imagine if Canelo would just agree and fight me already,” said David Benavidez on his Instagram post. He emphasized that it’s not just about the money but about giving fans the showdown they’ve been waiting for. According to the newly crowned light heavyweight title challenger, as a historic all-Mexican clash in boxing, this fight would be legendary.

Not leaving without throwing shade, David Benavidez said, “Let’s give the fans what they deserve!!! We’re 300 percent confident on this side, but I can’t say the same for the other side 😂.” Per the itinerary shared by Ring Magazine, Canelo could face either Jermall Charlo or Bruno Surace for the May fixture.

Then after September’s Crawford duel, he would return in May 2026 to face either Dmitry Bivol for a rematch. Or he may pick rising super middleweight star Hamzah Sheeraz or even settle for a Chris Eubank Jr. square-up. The slot for October 2026 appears available, it seems.

So will Canelo Alvarez finally relent and give David Benavidez the fight he has been seeking for so many years?

The door isn’t closed yet

Let’s say the scenario turns out to be true. During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Benavidez listed out a possible route to the Canelo dance. His stunning victory over David Morrell pivoted Benavidez to a title challenge. He would either face Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol, who are slated for a rematch on February 22 in Saudi Arabia. So if he wins the match, according to ‘The Mexican Monster,’ as the light heavyweight division’s new undisputed champion, he claims a fight with Canelo Alvarez becomes more compelling.

If Canelo’s grouse is restricted to paydays, then one should consider David Benavidez is no longer an afterthought. Consistent wins over some of the prominent names in both super middleweight and now light heavyweight have made him one of boxing’s biggest draws. So if the Mexican icon could opt for the likes of Surace or Sheeraz, then what’s wrong with ‘The Mexican Monster’?

David Benavidez pointed quite correctly. A fight with Canelo Alvarez is needed for the sport and, more significantly, for the fans. It’s more than what money could compensate for.
