Is Devin Haney really a 'weight bully,' or is Regis Prograis just stirring the pot?

Is the Ryan Garcia scandal nearing its conclusion? The young boxer faces a suspension and a significant financial penalty. Things at Devin Haney‘s end remain unclear. Whether he is surely going to proceed with the lawsuit against Garcia during the conversation with Dan Rafael. Despite this, public interest in the details surrounding both figures remains strong, with lingering issues still drawing attention. One of the most discussed aspects of the April 20 fight was Ryan Garcia’s three-pound weight gain compared to Devin Haney. It’s a different matter; he reportedly paid a price for that infringement.

Now the problem is that many often label Haney a ‘weight bully’. Is it because of his reported tendency to fight opponents much smaller in size? Anyway, how does ‘KingRy’s exceeding the weight limits stand out against the argument of Haney not standing true to those standards? When asked about Regis Prograis, it felt like payback for what he went through. The ‘Rougarou’ lost his crown to Devin Haney last December.

The former light-welterweight champion finally has a fight in hand. He will enter the ring on August 24 to face Jack Catterall in Manchester. So Fight Hub TV caught up with ‘Rougarou’ and checked for his views on the whole Ryan Garcia mess. The New Orleans-born southpaw replied, “That’s a circus, bro.

The whole affair seems to have bewildered him, it seems. He mentioned coming across clips of Devin Haney dancing after the match was declared a no-contest. So he finds the saga turning ‘wilder and wilder’. He just didn’t have words to describe the chaos. “I don’t know, bro; it’s like, I say, it’s just it’s crazy sh*t over there,” he said.

When asked about Ryan Garcia’s supplement contamination, Regis Prograis replied, “I don’t know what to think; I don’t know if it was, I mean, bro like sometimes it’s like, man, Ryan seems like he’s normal, then sometime it seems like he’s just not normal; something is going on with him, so I don’t know; I really honestly don’t know what to believe.

The reporter went back to the Devin Haney question: “In the past, I heard you allude to the fact that this was Karma cashing up to Devon for what he’s done. What exactly is that? What do you feel Devon’s been doing wrong?” Rougarou replied that what Ryan Garcia did in the April 20 fight was nothing but similar to what the dream accomplished on December 9 last year.

He further added that it’s easy to make out that ‘KingRy’ came deliberately heavy so that he ends up being the bigger boxer in the ring. That’s precisely the same thing Devin Haney did during their San Francisco title clash.

‘The Dream: Is really a ‘weight bully’?

But claims apart, is it true that Devin Haney is indeed a ‘weight bully’ as he is often made out to be? Yes, in the Regis Prograis fight, he stood at 165 pounds after the final weigh-in as against the ‘Rougarou’s 156.8. But then, what about previous fights? In the ‘Loma’ clash, while he weighed 134.9 lbs., the Ukrainian two-time Olympic gold medalist stood at 135 lbs.

Then, for the rematch with George Kambosos Jr., Devin Haney’s weight read 134.8, whereas his Australian rival was 134. Both were slightly under the 135-pound lightweight limits. Interestingly, it was ‘The Ferocious’ who missed weight by 0.36 lbs., as he weighed 135.36 against Haney’s 135 pounds in their first match.

It is worth noting that, barring the Prograis clash, the remaining figures are from the final weigh-ins and may not reflect the actual weight on the fight night. So is that enough to call Devin Haney a ‘weight bully’?
