Michael Buffer's tribute to Sid Eudy—does it bring back memories of wrestling's golden era for you?

One of the most iconic wrestlers of the 90s, who dominated both in WCW and WWE during that time, has sadly passed away. Sidney Raymond Eudy is no more! The wrestling community mourned his death after Eudy’s son announced the news of his passing via an Instagram post. Sid Vicious Eudy enjoyed an illustrious career in the WWE, dominating the airwaves with his intimidating presence in the ring, and his aggressive fighting style. One of the most imposing, and courageous figures in professional wrestling, Eudy has left a lasting legacy in in several big-name promotions, including WWE and WCW.

As several notable personalities from pro wrestling paid tribute to the late wrestler, legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer also remembered him with an unforgettable incident that brought Eudy’s pro-wrestling career to an abrupt end. In January 2001, during WCW’s Sin pay-per-view wrestling match, the pro-wrestler jumped off the turnbuckle to land a flying kick on his opponent but landed badly. His foot snapped instantly and was left dangling in what can only be described as a horrific injury.

Apparently, Buffer was there ringside to witness the career-ending injury. “I was literally seated 12-15 feet away from that horrible moment,” he wrote on X while posting the video of Eudy’s leg break. Additionally, he also paid his heartfelt tribute to the late Eudy.

“Sid was a great guy..a fantastic athlete and personality. R.I.P. Sid Vicious-Superstar!” Buffer wrote. Buffer’s tribute apart, it would be a great disservice if we didn’t explore the legacy left behind by the legendary Sid ‘Vicious’ Eudy.

A rich heritage for younger generations to feast on, and a wish unfulfilled!

Adopting his ring name after being inspired by punk rocker and Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious who died in 1979, Eudy started his wrestling career in 1987. As he rose in stature, Eudy joined World Championship Wrestling two years later, and subsequently, in 1991, he jumped ship to WWE. He has won world titles in both major US promotions four times, twice each. What’s more, he headlined many popular Wreslemania events, even getting the chance to fight in the main event of WrestleMania 13, losing to The Undertaker. He was also a part of many iconic storylines, famously starting a feud with Hulk Hogan in WWE as ‘Sid Justice’.

Have an interesting take?

Reportedly, during a guest appearance on the Attitude Era Podcast in July this year, Eudy revealed that he was still under contract with the WWE and was planning to make a return to the fight promotion. “They might want to do whatever they can to promote something like that. This could be a fun thing to get started on, too. If I do return, I might try to do some part-time work or something. [be a] I think I was also good at interviewing managers and special hires. A lot of people struggle with that all the time. If I can teach them, maybe I can help them with the interview,” Sid stated, citing that Vince McMahon’s exit from the federation, who did not like him, could open up opportunities for his return.

Sadly, Eudy died before he could fulfill his wish. But, he should have no regrets as he left behind enough highlight reels for budding wrestlers to take inspiration from. From Essentially Sports, our condolences are with Eudy’s family and friends. What is your favorite Sid ‘Vicious’ Eudy moment? Let us know in the comment section below.
