Ever since Devin Haney defeated Vasilly Lomachenko in May through a controversial split decision in his favor, he was faced with a conundrum. Haney wanted to fight against Regis Prograis in the super-lightweight division. However, he was also mandated by the WBC to defend his title against challenger, Shakur ‘Sugar’ Stevenson in the lightweight division. Both fights came with their own perks. Moving up a weight division would get him a handsome payout while also progressing through the ranks. And, staying in his lightweight class would offer him the opportunity to fight the biggest names in the division, including Shakur.

Most folks predicted that he would in fact choose the Regis fight over Stevenson. The prediction now seems to have come true. However, there remains a twist. Devin Haney’s team had written to the boxing regulatory bodies urging them to let him hold on to his lightweight titles as he moves up to the light welterweight class to fight Prograis. However, amidst these developments, Sugar and Haney seemed to have a bit of a back-and-forth against each other on social media.

Earlier today, Devin Haney responded to a user on Twitter who claimed that Shakur would win against Haney if they ever fought. He responded by saying that he could never lose to Shakur. ‘Sugar’ was quick to take his chance and call out ‘The Dream’. He tweeted, “U know u can’t fw me stop capping for Twitter.. I would fight u for 25% if u bet yo whole purse on the fight? Let’s get into some real sh&t gangsta”.

This interaction turned into a full-blown argument on social media between the two. Responding to the claims made by Shakur, Haney then asked him why he would not accept the deal when he was offered the fight. Stevenson responded by saying, “U is a bi*ch what happened to they say everything but let’s fight. Put yo money where yo mouth is p*ssy”

Referring to the Regis fight lined up for himself, and Shakur’s petition to the WBC for a mandatory title defense in the lightweight division, Haney said that he will come down to 135 lbs to fight him in the near future.

The altercation on social media continued as Shakur clapped back at ‘The Dream’. He said, “I got u so shook.. Regis just told u he not taking that baby money u offering so I’m telling u I’ll take it if u put yo whole purse up – That shouldn’t be no problem since u believe u could beat me right?”

This animosity stems from an earlier letter that Shakur’s team wrote to the WBC.

Haney vs Prograis is on the cards

It is final! It is being reported that Devin Haney will indeed go up a weight class to fight Regis Prograis in the light welterweight category. The fight is scheduled to take place on the 28th of October in Las Vegas, Nevada. This comes in the wake of the WBC granting Haney an extension until the 27th of July to make a decision between Shakur and Regis.

Earlier, Shakur had written to the body seeking for it to enforce the mandatory fight against Devin. Shakur’s team suggested a purse of 50-50 for the fight. However, given that Devin has already made up his mind and gone ahead with the Regis fight, it remains to be seen if the WBC will allow Haney to freeze his title at 135 lbs. And, it has been done before when Canelo Alvarez was allowed to freeze his WBC super middleweight title last year. He went up a weight class to fight Dimitry Bivol at 175.
