Is Canelo Alvarez losing his edge, or are his opponents just getting better?

There is not going to be another Canelo Alvarez. So, thousands flocked to T-Mobile Arena when he put on a show for the fans on September 14. It turned out to be an affair worth remembering for ages, as punches flew right off the shelf and relentless action kept fans on the edge. Despite Edgar Berlanga‘s hunger and aggression, the champion stood tall.

Alvarez crushed Berlanga’s dreams when he dished out a grueling punishment throughout the 12 rounds of the fight. The Mexican champion dominated the stats and rounds, with judges’ scorecards reading 117-110, 118-109 (x2) in his favor. Interestingly, Alvarez has gone the distance in his last 5 fights, and despite 39 knockouts in his record column, he has failed to register a knockout in the 7th round in any of his fights.

Alvarez started the fight on the front foot, with his jabs and hooks finding their mark. Meanwhile, Berlanga, contrary to his usual style, adopted a cautious approach, wary of Alvarez’s punches and the damage. It wasn’t long before that left him on the ropes, and Alvarez’s left hook dropped Berlanga to the canvas in the 3rd round. When the fight resumed, he looked to close the show. Loading heavy punches, with Berlanga’s back on the ropes. However, the challenger hung in there, and that was the spirit he showed for the rest of the fight.

Alvarez’s left hook, uppercuts, and combinations did substantial damage. Whereas, his high guard and tight defense didn’t allow Berlanga to land blows of his own. What seized the eyeballs was the clinching and animosity that was pouring out through taunts.
