Despite his meteoric rise, Joyce faced a significant setback when he stepped into the ring against Zhilei Zhang. The Londoner, who was considered the favorite, encountered unexpected challenges throughout the bout. Zhang’s southpaw style and precise punches staggered Joyce multiple times. The fight was eventually stopped by the referee in the sixth round due to Joyce’s swollen eye.
