What would a clash between the Tyson of this era with the Tyson of the bygone era look like? It is quite a known fact that the WBC champion, Tyson Fury, was named after the legendary heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson. Today, when the former hopes to live up to the expectations that come with being the namesake, he has also considered if he’d win against the legend. Recently, a Facebook post based on an earlier tweet started garnering responses from fans about who would come out on top in a potential matchup. The reactions were notable, to say the least.
When ‘Iron Mike’ hung his gloves in 2005, he left behind a legacy of 58 fights, 50 of them won impressively. Years later, in 2008, Fury entered the ring to write the same legacy that Mike Tyson had in his time. Over the years, Fury would go on to become one of the best boxers of the era, with 35 unbeaten fights on his record. But then came a fight, that would overturn the perception around him. Instrumental in this downfall? The person he was named after- Mike Tyson.

A Prime Mike Tyson vs. the Current Tyson Fury?
Earlier in August, a tweet went viral in which ‘The Gypsy King’ dropped his cents over who would be better in the ring: a prime Iron Mike or him. He wrote, “Like @MikeTyson already said it doesn’t matter who u think wins as im named after him so he already has won…a baby named after the champ the the baby becomes the champ wow.” His remarks came as reports emerged that the legendary fighter would be training Fury’s next opponent, Francis Ngannou.

On the 28th of October, ‘The Gypsy King’ undertook an exhibition-esque fight against debutante boxer, Francis Ngannou. Ever since the Saudi fight was conceptualized, the WBC champion received immense criticism for it. He was a world champion fighting against someone who’d never boxed before. On fight night, the criticisms would be leveled up. In a gasping change of currents, Fury managed to win a laborious victory only through a split decision.
This etched a dent in his boxing career. But it wasn’t just his inability to establish his dominance that resulted in this debacle. It was also Ngannou’s extreme precision timing and powerful jabs that pushed him this close to victory. And why would he not? He had the legend in his corner: former world champion Mike Tyson. The latter had joined the Cameroonian-French’s training camp to train him for his maiden boxing bout. Now, fans are battling it out in the comment section of a Facebook post about who would win in a potential bout.
Fans Chime in to Determine the Winner of this Fantasy Matchup
After Fury made those comments about Mike Tyson, there was a recent conversation on a social media post that tried to determine who would win between a prime Iron Mike and today’s Gypsy King. Fury himself has earlier held the belief that it would take Mike hardly 30 seconds to knock him out. Fans further leveraged the opportunity to give him a reality check.
One fan applauded the Gypsy King for his humbleness. They wrote, “Tyson Fury’s humbleness is one of the best comments. May God exalts you idol. You are one of the best.”
Another fan also applauded his modesty but believed that 30 seconds was an oversell. They commented, “Probably like 10 seconds, but I applaud his attempt to be modest.”
Another one agreed with Fury. They said, “Well he got that right.”

Then came a fan who suggested that Fury would not last that long even against Manny Pacquiao. They wrote, “Even manny pacquiao would knocked you out less than 30 seconds..Remember the speed and power of Pacquiao..Come on…”
Another fan implored that if Mike could defeat Fury in 30 seconds, then it would be much easier for George Foreman and Ernie Shavers. They commented, “Imagine what Ernie Shavers or George Foreman would do then…”
These comments are not just reflective of Mike Tyson’s prowess that he boasted of in his prime but, they are a representation of where Tyson Fury stands today. For a fighter of his stature, these comments remind him that he has a lot more to do to etch his legacy among the yester-year boxing greats.
