What happens when two legends collide? If last weekend’s undisputed clash in Saudi Arabia is any evidence, it means a night of awe-inspiring spectacle. It was Oleksandr Usyk who came off a fabulous win over Tyson Fury, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in over twenty years. And now, he is being pitted against fellow countryman Wladimir Klitschko in a fantasy match.

Before ‘The Cat’ took over the heavyweight division, ‘Dr Steelhammer’ had a dominant run, also having faced Tyson Fury, a fight he lost via unanimous decision in 2015, marking his first defeat in over a decade. So, he took great pride when Usyk bested his former foe! That in itself may suggest that Usyk could defeat Klitschko. But what do fans think?

It’s common knowledge that Klitschko and Usyk had sparred before, with some even suggesting Usyk had beaten the retired heavyweight. However, nothing has been said explicitly, not to mention, Usyk served in the Ukrainian defense force during Russia’s invasion and it was Klitschko who advised ‘The Cat’ to represent their country on the world stage.

So, when the now undisputed heavyweight champion scored a win against Fury, Klitschko and Usyk shared a special moment in the ring, partly because Usyk’s win acted as the vengeance Klitschko never got the chance to extract. But more importantly, Klitschko seemed proud because of the impact the win would have on their war-torn country.

Nevertheless, when IFL TV posed the question to their followers, “Prime Oleksandr Usyk vs prime Wladimir Klitschko… Who wins and how?” the community’s response was nothing short of explosive. Opinions poured in, painting a vivid picture of who the community believes would reign supreme in this hypothetical matchup.

Klitschko’s size or Usyk’s agility: Fans debate!

While such a fight might not be possible today, nothing could stop fans from dreaming, and boy, did they dream as hundreds of responses flooded the comment section of the post. One user speculated the fight would be highly technical with Usyk running around Klitschko, making the heavyweight miss most of his shots. It would emulate what happened during Usyk’s two fights against Anthony Joshua, who also defeated Klitschko.

However, the next user didn’t agree, suggesting Klitschko would keep Usyk at a distance because of reach advantage and through the sheer weight difference, would dominate his fellow Ukrainian. Yet, what Usyk did against Fury is evidence that such advantages don’t work against the former.

A boxing fan was unhappy with the question as if the post had insulted Usyk’s legacy in the sport. The user suggested that Usyk is ten times better than Klitschko.

Meanwhile, the next user confidently asserted that Usyk would emerge victorious via points if the duo was pitted against each other in the ring. If the entire comment section is to be considered, that’s not a rare opinion.

One boxing enthusiast highlighted rumors that suggested Oleksandr Usyk had already beaten Wladimir  Klitschko during sparring matches, so the user opted for the less risky option by picking Usyk for the win.

With that said it seems evidently clear that most people think Oleksandr Usyk would win had he fought Wladimir Klitschko in his prime. However, fans will most likely never know, which in a way is the beauty of the sweet science. Who do you reckon will win?
