YouTuber star Jake Paul is heading into his upcoming fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. However, Floyd Mayweather’s uncle Jeff Mayweather thinks ‘The Problem Child’ is heading into a familiar trap of criticism from the fans, like when he fought Mike Tyson.
Paul and Tyson locked horns back in November last year, which saw Paul secure a unanimous decision win over the 58-year-old easily. The fight turned out to be so easy for Paul that people started speculating that the fight may have been staged, especially because of Tyson’s reputation from his prime in the sport.
Now, Paul is about to fight a 39-year-old Chavez Jr., who last fought in July 2024 against a UFC fighter and struggled. Not to mention, the son of the legendary Mexican fighter was inactive throughout 2022 and 2023. This, coupled with his struggles with mental health and drug issues, makes his chances of winning the Paul fight next to none.

While appearing in an interview with The Mayweather Channel, Jeff Mayweather highlighted similar points, suggesting Paul is heading into the same trap of criticism. “I don’t think it’s really going to help him [prove his detractors wrong] that much,” Jeff said. “It will in the sense that he’s fought a legitimate fighter that actually was a professional fighter and a world champion.”

“But to get him after a 5-year layoff and him being inactive is almost just like fighting Mike Tyson,” Jeff added. Later in the interview, Jeff Mayweather confirmed that Paul has really good chances of winning the fight. However, the fight will come with similar challenges of criticism from the masses.
“Of course, he’s going to have some criticism,” he told the reporter. “It’s still better to get a win over a legitimate fighter, a legitimate world champion, than to fight someone that nobody knows, or even fight Mike Tyson in his almost 60.” While Mayweather has his doubts about Paul fighting Chavez Jr., Jake Paul’s brother seems to think otherwise.
Logan Paul shares thoughts on Jake Paul fighting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Logan Paul has weighed in on his brother Jake Paul’s upcoming fight against former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While the matchup has drawn mixed reactions due to Chavez Jr.’s decline and inactivity, Logan believes Jake is making smart moves. Speaking with The Schmo, Logan said, “I think Jake is taking the perfect path. I think he’s taking guys who are very good, very skilled boxers that are either at his level or maybe even a bit above.”

Despite Chavez Jr.’s struggles—both personally and professionally—Logan remains confident in his brother’s abilities. “But lemme tell you something about my brother. That boy can chew,” he added. Jake’s attempts to secure fights with boxing elites like Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis fell through, making this bout with Chavez Jr. yet another chapter in his strategic, if polarizing, boxing journey.
That said, it appears Jeff Mayweather seems to think Jake Paul has trapped himself in the same cycle of criticism from boxing fans. However, do you agree with Mayweather’s assessment? Should Jake Paul have chosen someone else?
