Post His Controversial Win, George Kambosos Jr Pens a Note on Why a “Close Fight is Not a Robbery”

After the official decision of George Kambosos Jr vs. Maxi Hughes disappointed fans, ‘Ferocious’ took to Twitter and in a lengthy statement argued in favor of his victory. In his opinion, close fights are not robberies and his was a “close gritty victory against a top 10 lightweight and IBO World Champion“. In addition, the 30-year-old called for credit because he believes he walked “straight into a tough test” after almost nine months of absence from competition.

While David Sutherland scored the bout 1114-114, Gerald Ritter and Josef Mason scored the contest 115-113 and 117-111 respectively. Mason’s scorecard which had Kamobosos Jr winning 9 rounds was a bolt from the blue for a number of fans and caused debate. In his latest statement, Kambosos Jr proclaimed that “117/111 was too far off for a scorecard“, however, he also announced he didn’t control the judges’ views. George Kambosos Jr urges fans to mute “biased commentary” and “rewatch the fight”

For those who have objected to the result of Kambosos Jr and Hughes, the 21-2 boxer has requested them to rewatch his last fight. According to his statement, “many people” who did the aforementioned realized that “the decision was fair and correct“. “Do yourself a favour and mute that biased commentary & rewatch the fight! And then tell me exactly what you think as many people have gone back, done that and seen the decision was fair and correct,” stated Kambosos Jr. Additionally, while ‘Ferocious’ himself doubted the 117-111 scorecard, he claimed the “8/4, 7/5 decision our way was right”.

Having argued in favor of his victory, Kambosos Jr branded Hughes a “dangerous” fighter. He called him a “true top 10 lightweight“. “We give him the utmost respect and it was an honour to share the ring with another warrior and family man like myself,” Kambosos Jr added.  He then declared that he is looking forward to improving and working on his craft. “Thanks for all the support to my fans and supporters worldwide,” he concluded saying.
