Did the judges rob Bivol of a deserved victory, or was Beterbiev the rightful winner?

The light heavyweight undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol was a spectacle. Both fighters poured everything into the 12 rounds to carve out a masterpiece performance that will be remembered for a long time. But the result overshadowed the commitment by the fighters when Beterbiev won the fight via a majority decision with the scores reading—114-114, 115-113, and 116-112.

This result left the fans and even Eddie Hearn bewildered as everyone felt that the Bivol was denied a rightful victory. And even if Beterbiev was the winner, the difference between the scores should not have been this vast. The controversial result has started a demand for a rematch, as Hearn requested His Excellency Turki Alalshikh to do the right thing.

After the match, Fight Hub TV questioned Hearn whether the decision of the fight surprised him. The Matchroom Boxing chairman did not hold back and declared, “It is a joke,” with disbelief and anger evident on his face. He further added that even Artur Beterbiev’s camp knew that the result was not right. “They knew. They told him (Beterbiev) in the 10th round that you have to knock him (Bivol) out to bring this fight home. It’s on TV,” stated Hearn as he explained that his fighter was so much ahead before the start of the championship rounds.

He further explained that after the fight, the 21-0 boxer’s camp was expressionless, as they knew that Bivol had done something marvelous. Meanwhile, everyone in Bivol’s corner was already celebrating the victory. Hearn refused to accept the decision as he further added, “How can you score that fight 8-4 to Artur Beterbiev? Unbelievable, terrible decision,” as he ripped apart the judges and scoring.

Eddie Hearn then pleaded to His Excellency for a rematch and hoped that the latter would do the right thing. “Hopefully His Excellency will do the decent thing and give Bivol a rematch,” stated Hearn. Well, it seems like his pleadings were heard as even His Excellency, not being satisfied with the result, stated that he would push for a rematch.

Dmitry Bivol wants to prove himself

After the fight, His Excellency termed the bout as “one of the great fights of the last 20 years.” But the result left a sour taste in his mouth as he thought the 23-1 boxer was the winner and the scoring was not right. “But I don’t think the result was fair, in my opinion. The two fighters are like my brothers, but I think Bivol won two rounds more,” stated His Excellency.

He proposed a rematch between the two and stated that he would try to convince both of them to accept the terms as the fans and Bivol himself deserved it. “I will focus and I will try to do the rematch. If they accept, we will do it.” The lack of a contractual clause for a rematch has made things tricky, but Dmitry Bivol for his part is ready for a rematch.
