Gervonta Davis was inactive in boxing for more than a year after a great performance against Ryan Garcia in April 2023. But the southpaw made a stunning comeback and went up against Frank Martin on June 15th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. With his splendid knockout victory over Martin in the 8th round, he extended his professional boxing record to a perfect 30-0 with 28 knockouts. ‘Tank’ made his fans wait for 14 months, and now they want to see more of him inside the squared circle.
Although it has been just a couple of days since Davis’ victory over Martin, the boxing world has already started pairing him up with different boxers for a potential fight. Having said that, who could be the top 5 boxers who would give a tough fight to the WBA lightweight champion? Let us consider a few potential opponents.
Vasyl Lomachenko – Ukrainian boxing phenom Vasyl Lomachenko is one of the most technically superior fighters of this era. For pure boxing fans who want to see two extraordinary guys going up against each other, Lomachenko vs. Davis would be a treat. From a stylistic point of view, there is nothing better at lightweight than seeing these two figure each other out. ‘Loma’ lost a fight against Devin Haney via a controversial unanimous decision last year. However, he made a remarkable comeback in May this year against George Kambosos Jr. and won the fight via technical knockout. The 36-year-old is also the current IBF lightweight champion. If Davis vs. Lomachenko happens, both fighters will get a chance to unify their titles. Fans are just hoping to see this fight in the near future.

Shakur Stevenson – With Davis’ explosive knockout power, and Stevenson’s defensive boxing technique, it would be entertaining for the fans to see them square off inside the ring. Both boxers are in their prime and haven’t been defeated yet. Stevenson also has the WBC lightweight belt, providing both of them a shot to unify their titles and put an end to years of debate surrounding who is the best at lightweight. The two fighters have engaged in numerous tussles online challenging each other, but it never reached its fruition. Let’s see if their banter actually leads up to a real fight.
Isaac Cruz – ‘Tank’ fought Isaac Cruz in December 2021. ‘Pitbull’ is one of the few fighters who went the entire 12 rounds against the knockout artist. Not just that, unlike most Tank fights, this was actually close. Davis, when he defeated Ryan Garcia last year, after the fight, was asked if Pitbull was tougher than Garcia. And he answered, “Yes, that’s for sure.” Boxing fans would be thrilled to see a rematch between two of the best in the game. However, the only problem with that is Issac Cruz is the current WBA champion in the Super Lightweight division. Either Pitbull will have to go down or Tank will have to go up a division, or else the fight can happen at a catchweight. Let’s hope that there’s a sequel fight between the two.
More lucrative fights for Gervonta Davis
Teofimo Lopez – ‘The Takeover’ fights in the super lightweight division currently. But for a clash with Davis, he might consider coming down to 135 pounds. Teofimo Lopez is a phenomenal fighter and has lost just one fight till now which was against George Kambosos Jr. Both boxers are young and talented, and it would be a fresh matchup for the audience as well. Furthermore, Lopez has a reputation for demanding high sums for big bouts. At the same time, Davis’ star power would eventually lead to more revenue by producing more PPVs.

Ryan Garcia – Fans were long anticipating a clash between Garcia and ‘Tank’, and it finally happened last year. It was indeed an exciting match, and the fight truly lived up to its expectations. Both fighters are at the top of their games, and their popularity made it one of the biggest fights of the year. Interestingly, after Davis was celebrating his victory against Frank Martin, Garcia came to the ring to congratulate Davis. ‘KingRy’ was wearing a t-shirt that read, “Tank’s No. 1 fan.” Then he turned around and the back of his t-shirt read, “Rematch me bi*ch.” Moreover, Garcia also congratulated Tank and said, “We gotta run it back.” If Garcia defeats Tank in the rematch, there’s a high probability that the two will face off again in a rematch. It would grow to be one of the biggest boxing rivalries of this era. The only problem with that is weight. Ryan Garcia has already said he cannot and will not fight at 135 lbs. This means Gervonta Davis will have to go up to 140 lbs. Not long ago, Tank’s coach, Coach Calvin Ford had reiterated that he would not let Tank go up to 140 when he did it for his last fight at the super lightweight division. Since Tank is comfortable at 135, the chance of them fighting again still remains slim.
Well, all five fighters would give a tough contest to ‘The Baltimore Prodigy’. Currently, he is enjoying his latest win over Frank Martin. But the world is waiting to see him back in action again. Meanwhile, who do you think will make a tough opponent for Davis? Did we leave out your favorite choice to fight Gervonta Davis? Post your suggestions in the comments below.
