Is Jake Paul a legitimate boxer, or just another celebrity cashing in on the sport's legacy?

Jake Paul has turned the boxing world upside down, whether you like it or not. He is the talk of the town and holds all the cards. Maybe you are angry with him for spoiling your boxing icon’s legacy and now growing impatient to dish out punishment on him. Or maybe you want a big payday. Both the roads go through him. Artur Beterbiev and Gervonta Davis have lined up already, but it’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. who could jump the row.

“It’s time, Jake,” Chavez Jr. issued a call-out to the Problem Child after he triumphed over Mike Tyson. The Mexican boxing legend’s son tried to instigate him, after laying out in simple terms why the latter would avoid a fight with someone who knew how to box. But Gilberto Mendoza, the president of the WBA, has added charm to the offer, as he offered to make it a title fight. And it’s not the first time. The WBA president had pushed for the fight back in July too, when ‘Problem Child’ had dispatched Mike Perry. So, there is an enticing offer on the table, a real one too. Will he accept it?

Well, for once, if you think it could be a wild dream, you should look at the 27-year-old boxer’s career trajectory. With that record set straight, there is another interesting development. With a win over Chris Billiam-Smith, Gilberto Ramirez is the WBA (super) cruiserweight champion, and now there is a slot open for the regular title. It’s the perfect opportunity for Paul, as his end game always has been a world championship, and that’s the reason he is slowly building his resume, growing confident after each fight and ready to make the last leap. With every win, his ambitions are stirring and rising, and if he has a world title on offer, we see no reason he wouldn’t accept it.

That too at a division that is the 11-1 record holder’s natural terrain. Despite fighting at the heavyweight in his last fight, Paul expressed his intention to go back to the cruiserweight limit of 200. He has felt most comfortable there. What’s more? Chavez Jr., 38, has also entered cruiserweight territory with his last fight with Uriah Hall as he ended his 3-year-long layoff this July. So, both fighters would give it a go. Besides, there is another box that Paul will tick in his fight with Chavez Jr.

Bolstering resume: hunting another world champion

You look at Paul’s career, and you are more than likely to disregard him as a serious fighter and consider him more of a celebrity fighter. After all, the Cleveland native has only fought fighters on the declining slope of their careers. The only time he exchanged blows with a boxer his age, you know what happened. So, Paul needs legitimacy and credibility to push him through these scathing remarks.

The 54-6-1 record holder has been at the top of the boxing hierarchy, as he reigned supreme at the middleweight division for some time. That’s not all. He will be the biggest test for Paul, as he will be much more equipped to give him a run for the money. Chavez Jr. has extensive experience, and topping him would separate Paul from the crowd of influencer boxers, and the fans would also start giving him the due credit.

Not to mention the fight is a good tactical matchup for the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter, as he could go all out and a knockout will cement his image as a true boxing star. After adding Tyson’s name to his resume, he could beef it up with the legacy of the Chavez name. That alone should attract Paul’s attention. But as they say, everything has a flip side.

Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: not a completely rosy picture

Another older opponent, a fighter in the limelight of his career, and especially the troublesome past of Chavez Jr. puts a dent in the otherwise glorious landscape. The Culiacan native gained notoriety with his lackluster performances and attitude towards fights. His lack of seriousness about boxing disenchanted many fans, and defeating him in his way past prime days could only result in heavier criticism.

And what if El-Gallo fails to put enough in the ring to bag the win? A loss would effectively mark the end of his professional ambitions, money fights, and a championship run dream. Undoing all that he has done to date. But isn’t that what it’s all about? Paul has to be tactical and careful about his choices. And you shouldn’t be surprised if he goes with him or an even a bigger name. The fans will be entertained, regardless.
