Few fights attract your attention that are not necessarily clad in big names. But you should sit back and take notice of an all-Mexican affair when the two compatriots clash on the Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III card. More than the allure of putting on a show, the two are desperate to steer their career to winning ways. So, will it be Luis Rodriguez vs Cesar Vaca who finds himself on the cusp of breaking into the top 10 rankings? Or will it be Cesar Vaca, who last fell one fight short of challenging for the world title?
The fans will find their answer this Saturday, August 24, at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City. The fight offers them a tactical and stylistic matchup when a brawler and aggressor meet a technician in the middle of the squared circle. Before that happens, let’s explore how the two stack up.

What made Rodriguez a sensation back at home? The fans know what to expect when he walks into the ring. That is high forward pressure, high guard, and body blows, followed by combinations. That’s a recipe for success and swaying the fans. And at 23, the Mexico City native is one of the hottest super-bantamweight prospects out there. He made his pro-debut in 2019 and soon caught the eyeballs after dismantling each of his opponents except one. With that success, he soon rushed to a splendid and unblemished record of 15-0 with 14 KOs.
You should take a look at his KO ratio column, reading 93.33%, suggesting Rodriguez has always showcased an urgency to finish fights. But he doesn’t lose focus on his target. While the Mexican fighter remains an aggressor, he also packs skills in his bag. He has exhibited all the markings of a champion ever since he claimed the WBC Youth Super Bantamweight title, defeating Brandon Romero Herrera in 2022. So, Rodriguez is one of the last fighters one should face in the ring. Where does it leave Vaca?

At 22, Vaca is the younger of the two, but he has more fights under his belt. He remained active since his debut in 2018 and soon racked up an impressive record of 15-0 until 2022. Things changed in 2023 when he faced Erik Robles after a layoff of almost a year. Not only did the Guadalajara resident lose his undefeated record, but he also saw Robles challenge Liam Davies for the IBO strap, an opportunity that could be his.
Consequently, Vaca stumbled to 16-1-1 with 11 KOs. However, the fans still respect his skills and put faith in him to bounce back strongly. What has garnered a long list of fans is his caliber as an all-round boxer. With a KO ratio of 68.75%, he has enough power in his punches to flatline a foe and enough tricks in his bag to go to the distance and collect a win. But will it be enough to stop the Rodriguez train?
Prediction: X factor, and where will the fight be won?
When Rodriguez last fought earlier this year on the IBA Champions Night against Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov, he dropped the exhibition bout. He got found out by the more experienced Uzbek fighter, who had also won the amateur world championship in 2019. So, he is not invisible. But ‘Zurdo’ is the current #11 ranked IBF fighter for a reason.

With youth on his side, he can improve and add more weapons to his arsenal. And for that, he needs to gain more experience. Why so? Because he has fought only 38 rounds in his entire pro career as of now. So, his aggression remains a double-edged sword in these early career days, where an experienced fighter can pierce through his defense, leaving his offense worthless.

But is Vaca that fighter? He could test Rodriguez to his limits, as he has fought competitors with better resumes, and now he has a taste of a top competitor after fighting Robles. Both are coming off a loss, although, with Rodriguez, it’s not on his pro-career sheet. So, it will be a showdown between their zeal and mindset rather than their skills and power. It will be a typical Mexican slugfest, for sure, where either of the fighters could take the win home. But Rodriguez might overwhelm Vaca with power.
