It’s boxing, you say. The wrong boxer gets his hand raised instead of the rightful victor. The cycle continues, and it never seems to end. How can you justify a boxer’s sweat and blood going to waste? Judges influence boxing results; more often than not, they leave fans and fighters with bewilderment and disgust. KSI feels he has faced the brunt of it and is ready to change the boxing world himself. And his fight against the whimsical actions of judges starts with Misfits Boxing.

It started with Tommy Fury edging past KSI on the judges’ scorecard on October 14. However, the fans hotly debated the decision, and some contested that the judges had it wrong on their cards. Despite repeated appeals, nothing came out of it. To ensure none of the boxers had to suffer the same fate, KSI decided to revamp the way fights are scored. Will that change boxing for good?

Detailing the shifts in how KSI’s Misfits Boxing will move ahead now, Mams Taylor believes the wrong decisions will become a rarity. Further, the co-president of Misfits Boxing admits judges will not call shots anymore. The supervisors, instant replay, and a jury will assist them.

“It will be very, very rare you see a wrong decision. It’s going to include judges, supervisors, instant replay, and a jury. At the end of every round the corners will be given the scorecards. The criteria for judging will be laid out… We’re here to revolutionise and we’re going to obliterate any and all corruption in the sport,” Taylor told Fred Beck.

Therefore, boxing might soon follow the suit of other sports where a judge’s call can be challenged and reversed with technology. Judges’ erroneous actions will not go unnoticed and unscrutinized. Amusingly, the idea of handing out scorecards to the corners will help them reassess their strategy after each round.

Irrespective of the outcome of Misfits Boxing’s attempt to bulldoze the traditional order, sweeping changes will follow soon. The boxing community has seen an array of frustrating results this year. All those fueled the need to make sure a revamp takes place.

The winners and the victims—keeping it under wraps?

The look on Vasiliy Lomachenko‘s face was vivid when Devin Haney swept the judges’ scorecard this May. KSI had the same disbelief. Most recently, Francis Ngannou felt betrayed, even though he believed he had done enough to beat Tyson Fury.

While you could argue that Tommy Fury had beaten Jake Paul and KSI in a closely contested fight, it’s not the same with Lomachenko and Ngannou. All have felt the stinginess of being on the wrong side. Moreover, it reignites the debates of boxing marred by corruption. Judges face no repercussions, despite their arbitrary decisions deeply affecting boxers and their families.

Misfits Boxing’s innovative steps might hint towards the future, devoid of all this. Where the righteous winners reign supreme and their skills decide the outcome of the fight. However, too much change also brings chaos. Is the boxing community ready for the drastic changes?

A blessing or Pandora’s box in waiting

It will come down to reprimanding judges, setting criteria for judging, and, most probably, setting up specialized training. But who sets the standard? Will damage take a front step, or will landing more volume of shots inch you closer to the victory?

If the soccer world’s VAR conundrum suggests anything, it’s how technology has its limited uses. Criteria and rules still evoke confusion, and human error is part and parcel of the game. The outcry and outrage are still over how decisions are made and how they affect the game’s outcome. Is boxing heading towards a similar anarchy? Only time will tell. But are these changes needed? Yes, and sooner.
