When they stand across from each other inside the squared circle on June 1, they’ll have the chance to lay their rivalry to rest. It has been years since Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic‘s sparring session made waves in the boxing community. But those murmurs never died off. The boxers now meet years later on the Queensberry vs. Matchroom 5×5 bill on June 1 in a high-stakes fight with serious ramifications for their careers. So, who will leave the arena with a win in his record column?
Dubois vs. Hrgovic winner can book the ticket to fight the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch for all the marbles next year, and if things work out in their favor and the IBF decides to strip the undisputed winner, the IBF gold would fall in the winner’s lap. In any scenario, the victor is set for glory. But how do the two boxers stack up before the highly anticipated clash?

Dubois, 26, is the younger of the boxers and boasts an impressive record of 20-2. The British fighter is a power puncher, relying on his sheer power to rack up wins. Notably, he has collected 19 of those wins through knockout, and his KO ratio of 95% evokes fear among his rivals. The Greenwich native gives away the ground in size, as he stands tall at 6’5″ (196 cm) and has a reach of 78″ (198 cm).
Meanwhile, Hrgovic, 31, has a larger frame and a height of 6’6″ (198 cm) and also carries the reach advantage of 82″ (208 cm). Unlike his opponent, the Croatian fighter has an unblemished record of 17-0 with 14 KOs. In addition, he has also carved out a name for himself as an aggressive fighter with his 82% KO ratio. That’s not it; he also utilizes the size advantage to the fullest, as he comes into the ring heavier at 246.0 lbs (111.6 kgs), compared to Dubois’ 239.0 lbs (108.4 kgs). However, these numbers don’t paint an accurate picture, as both fighters are coming into the fight on the heels of contrasting recent fortunes.
Recent form, momentum, and fighting styles
Dubois turned in the performance of his career against Jarrell Miller last December, as he returned to winning ways. He showed heart and improvement in that fight, finally overcoming the beatdown from Oleksandr Usyk. ‘Dynamite’ is a big, dangerous boxer who packs enough power behind his punches to hit and floor anyone. But he doesn’t like to face the brunt of heavy punches on his body. Instead of the shot’s power, he is more rattled by the idea that he is rocked. That’s something he might need to fix before he steps into the ring against Hrgovic, who is slick and lands big punches.
While the former WBA champion has shown signs of improvement in pulling holes in defense, it is up for debate whether Hrgovic will pick him apart. The latter is coming off splendid wins over Zhilei Zhang, Demsey McKean, and most recently, Mark De Mori. But the Zagreb native had a lackluster evening against McKean and found himself wobbling a couple of times. That didn’t stop him from maintaining his undefeated record, though. His granite chin absorbed shots from ‘Big Bang’ and is one reason for his stellar rise. But can the 2016 Olympic medalist rely on his chin again?

Prediction: Who wins it?
Dubois has all the weapons in his arsenal to bag a win. But he has been fragile, a weakness Joe Joyce exploited first, and then Usyk. He needs to step up his defensive skills to stand a chance against Hrgovic. Hrgovic, on the other hand, can exchange punches in the middle of the ring but also leaves himself open to being hit. While he has also been vulnerable, he is tougher when compared to ‘Triple D’.

What works for Dubois is his youth, speed, and power advantage over Hrgovic. He has to keep Hrgovic testing, with relentless pressure. But that’s where Hrgovic’s experience will come in handy. He can afford to start slow and slowly pick Dubois apart with proper shots and can counter punches with heavy shots. While many give Hrgovic a better chance at winning, Dubois can reinvent himself and muscle his way to victory.
