WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis’ next fight is in limbo following a statement on social media. In the meantime, the Baltimore native’s long-time trainer Calvin Ford has finally broken the silence on the matter with a cryptic message on social media. There had already been several postponements in the Davis vs. Lamont Roach fight.
The pair was initially slated to square off on December 14th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, for Davis’ WBA strap. However, scheduling issues pushed the fight back to March 1st in Brooklyn, New York. Not to mention, there was quite the backlash from fans against Davis for fighting, who fans felt would be an easy opponent for ‘Tank’.
Regardless, just the other day, Davis hopped on his Instagram story to write, “The fight is f***ing canceled.” While Davis broke the unfortunate news to his fans on social media, Roach was unaware of the ordeal. The WBA super featherweight champion who was given special permission from the major sanctioning bodies to fight Davis was busy training.

He uploaded a video of him shadowboxing in the gym, having sparred with welterweight boxer Mykal Fox. Roach also claimed in another post that he had no idea the fight had been canceled. “The f*** ya keep asking me for?” he wrote on his Instagram story, following the statement from Davis. “He said that s*** not me. I’m locked in ain’t s*** changed.”
“March 1st Brooklyn #Andthenew,” he added. It’s also worth mentioning that PBC, the fight’s promoters, have not shared a statement on the matter as of the time of writing. Plus, tickets for the March 1st event are still on sale online. Only time will tell whether the fight will actually happen. Amid all this, Ford shared his thoughts on the matter.

“People often fail to comprehend my suffering, my convictions, and my emotions regarding various matters; however, I possess that understanding,” he wrote on Instagram. “It is, in fact, a profound gift from my Lord, motivating me to persist and to strive toward becoming the best version of myself within my circle.”
Meanwhile, someone else seems to be offering Gervonta Davis another opponent.

Oscar De La Hoya steps in to save the day for Gervonta Davis
Former world champion and the face of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya has stepped in to help Davis find an alternate opponent. It’s worth noting Davis had previously announced his intentions to retire from the sport following a few fights in 2025. One could argue that could have something to do with Davis’ statement on fight cancelation.
Regardless, Oscar is seemingly trying to give Davis another opponent. “@Gervontaa_ Give me a call if you need a fight, I have the perfect guy for you,” he wrote on X. Oscar co-promoted the fight between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia. However, it’s also possible that this is simply an attempt to generate buzz and get fans talking about the fight.

That being said, Calvin Ford’s statement doesn’t really clarify why Gervonta Davis canceled the fight against Lamont Roach. But because the tickets are still on sale, the chances are the fight will happen as planned, and if not with Davis, with someone else. Do you agree? What do you think is going on?
