Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in Mexico, polishing his skills before he takes on John Gotti III. But the idea of an open workout in a country that has one of the biggest modern boxing superstars didn’t turn out well. Why? What happens when you fight in a territory that is not yours? You get slandered, and that’s what happened to him, with the crowd shouting Canelo Alvarez‘s name.
Mayweather, 47, engaged in a pad work session with Crystal Thomas to help him prepare for the much-anticipated rematch on August 24 in Mexico City. It has been a while since he matched up with Conor McGregor and then hung up his gloves. But the boxing legend has kept himself occupied with exhibition fights. As he prepared for his latest one, he didn’t find Mexico City welcoming.

In a video uploaded by Fight Hype TV, the viewers could witness Mayweather Jr., at 50-0, do the pad work and, in between, issue some instructions to Thomas to help him sharpen his reflexes. However, as he went on, the crowd started changing Alvarez’s name, suggesting their support for their compatriot while highlighting Floyd and Canelo’s rivalry.
Notably, the two last met inside the ring in 2013, when a young Alvarez, then 23, fought a veteran, Mayweather Jr., then 36. While there were rumors of a rematch, those never came true. A decade later, things have changed drastically, with Alvarez, at 61-2-2, cementing his position as the face of boxing. The fans flocked to the comments section to Mayweather Jr.’s aid.
Fans came to ‘Pretty Boy’s rescue
A fan referred to the outcome of Mayweather Jr. vs. Alvarez, in which the Mexican fighter lost the bout by a majority decision. They declared, “They yelling Canelo like he didn’t beat the sh*t out of him.”

A user pointed to the age of Mayweather Jr. when he handed a beating to Alvarez. Usually, 36 is considered to be the time when most of the boxers have called it quits, but the Michigan native defeated one of the hottest prospects at that time with relative ease. They commented, “They screaming Canelo and May owned him at the tender age of 36.”

Someone also emphasized the performance of Mayweather Jr. in the fight. Every time he threw a punch, Alvarez had no answer. They announced, “Lol The shouting Canelo but he had nothing on Floyd wtf???”
A comment suggested a hypothetical fight between Mayweather Jr. and Terence Crawford. When ‘The Pretty Boy’ was about to hang up his gloves, ‘Bud’ had just moved into the welterweight division so the two could never fight. The comment read, “Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Bud would be awesome, but Floyd Mayweather Jr. would want it as an exhibition fight, tho.”
Lastly, a fan sent his wishes and prayers to Roger Mayweather, who trained and coached Mayweather Jr. They then highlighted how Mayweather Jr. was coaching a new generation of pad workers in Thomas. They wrote, “RIP Roger Mayweather! Floyd is training a new generation of pad workers!”
