Does Imane Khelif's story inspire you, or does it highlight the harsh realities of Olympic dreams?

Imane Khelif rose against adversity and challenges when she fought at the Olympics this year. More than the opponents’ punches, it was the harsh criticism and questions about her gender that she had to face. But she stood tall and left the Paris Olympics with a gold medal as a champion. So, when she came back home, the Algerian boxer had a champion’s welcome, where crowds flocked to catch a glimpse of their home-grown champion.

Khelif, 25, started her campaign with a win against Angela Carini, which soon erupted into controversy as the Italian boxer fell off on her knees and sobbed in the ring. Soon, some fans questioned her eligibility to participate in the women’s category and dug up her last year’s IBA World Championship disqualification to support their claims. However, her family tendered official documents, and her school pictures made the rounds on the internet, ultimately leading up to the Tiaret native winning the gold. So, when she reached home, she penned a heartfelt message to her people and country.

The 42-9 record holder turned to her Instagram handle and shared the images of her celebratory bus ride. She wrote in the caption, “The height of pride and honor is in representing your country and raising its flag high. It is an even greater joy to share that pride with your family, loved ones, and community. The warm welcome I received in the streets of Tiaret and Biban Misbah, and the overwhelming feelings of love and support, will stay in my heart forever.”

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you all. Thank you, Tiaret, Thank you, Algeria. Thank you to all Arabs, and to everyone who supported me and stood by me. The future is bright, Inshallah. With love, Your daughter, Imane Khelif,” Khelif added.

Notably, the country’s president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, greeted the welterweight boxer upon her return. She was joined by runner Djamel Sedjati, who won a bronze medal in the men’s 800 meters, and gymnast Kaylia Nemour, who won the women’s uneven bars gold. This was a fairy tale ending for Khelif, who also fulfilled her dream, which she had when she first took up boxing.

When the orthodox boxer won the Olympic gold, she also lived her grand dream. She wanted to stand on the podium with the Algerian flag getting raised and the national anthem playing in the background. Khelif made it come true. After the finals, she declared, “I’ve worked for eight years, no sleep, eight years tired.”

However, she will continue to seize headlines, as she has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk, J. K. Rowling, and others for cyber harassment. If the case goes to court, they could face trial too. It remains to be seen how the French authorities see the case.
