Amir Tyson's outrage justified or overblown? Did Haliey Welch really butcher 'Empire State of Mind'?

‘Hawk Tuah Girl’ Haliey Welch has gone viral once again for messing up the widely popular song ‘Empire State of Mind’ by renowned American rapper and pop star Jay-Z. However, this time the eldest son of legendary boxer and former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, Amir Tyson, isn’t happy about it at all.

Earlier this summer, the 22-year-old became insta-famous when she was attending Nashville’s CMA Fest and ran into a content creator conducting a street-style interview. After her quick rise to fame in June, she landed an appearance in Bill Maher‘s ‘Club Random Podcast’ in late July, where her comments on Jay-Z’s song would…..you guessed it, create another viral moment.

Maher uploaded the hour-long episode of his podcast on YouTube on July 28th, where the duo spoke about everything pop culture—from the Kardashians to the Beatles, who swept America in the 1960s. However, on July 30th, Maher shared an excerpt from the podcast on X, where they spoke about hip-hop music.

A few days later several social media accounts started circulating the clip, which eventually landed on Amir Tyson’s feed. The clip shows Maher and Welch discussing the latter’s love for Taylor Swift, and Maher’s interest in hip-hop. During this back and forth, Haliey reveals she is into “old rap”, prompting Maher to suggest he feels Tupac Shakur and Jay-Z’s songs were “old rap”.

To this, Welch suggested that she doesn’t listen to those artists, but is a big fan of the Jay-Z song “about New York”. This was a reference to Jay-Z’s collaboration with Alicia Keys in the ‘Empire State of Mind’ track. It followed Welch singing the song, although, fair warning, with the wrong lyrics. “He’s like, ‘concrete jungle wet dream tomato.’ You know, about New York”, Welch sang.

When the son of Mike Tyson, Amir, discovered it on Instagram today, he quickly shared it in his story with a long and disheartened message. “Our country is f**ked… This era of 15 minutes of intense fame to complete irrelevancy has gotten completely out of hand. Only people from the internet that have… gained actual celebrity status are the Paul brothers and maybe the Speed, Kai cenant and Adin Ross… My kids and grandkids won’t have a clue who these streamers are lol”. While this was indeed a hilarious exchange, this wasn’t the only part of the podcast that made headlines.

Bill Maher tells Haley Welch that Travis Kelce will leave Taylor Swift

On the July 29 episode of Bill Maher’s ‘Club Random podcast’, Maher made a pretty bold prediction about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift‘s relationship. He said, “He’s gonna dump her, though, you know that,” hinting that the NFL star might end things with Taylor. Maher went on to compare it to the Gatorade dump at the Super Bowl—saying it’s not a question of if, but when it’ll happen.

Hailey Welch, aka ‘Hawk Tuah Girl’ is a big Taylor Swift fan, jumped in with her own take, saying, “You gotta think about it this way, if he does that, can you imagine the next album we’re gonna get off of that?… it will be ‘F**k Travis”. It just shows how much buzz and speculation about celebrity relationships can stir up media and fan excitement.

Even though the conversation on Maher’s podcast was harmless and a humorous take on what Haley Welch thought was the right lyrics of Jay-Z’s song, Amir, the son of Mike Tyson, seems to have taken offense to it. Will the ‘Hawk Tuah Girl’ stay relevant in a few years? No one can tell, but do you think this post from Amir was necessary?
