Gervonta Davis was called out for “cherry-picking” his opponent yet again after his fight against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach was announced. Many fans were even calling for the cancelation of the bout, but despite a couple of postponements, everything seemed to be on track, with Roach even saying that a rematch has already been agreed. However, Davis’ Instagram story suggested that the contest was off.

Brooklyn’s Barclays Center was set as the venue for the March 1 clash next year, but it appears those plans have been scrapped. On Monday, Davis took to his Instagram to post an image with the caption, “THE FIGHT IS F—–G CANCEL.” No official confirmation from the PBC has come yet as Davis deleted the post later, but it has thrown the future of the fight in turmoil. With this uncertainty lingering, Oscar De La Hoya has come to the rescue.

The Golden Boy Promotions lynchpin took to his X handle and disclosed that he had a perfect person for the job. He wrote, “@Gervontaa_ Give me a call if you need a fight, I have the perfect guy for you.”

Davis, 30, has turned to his social media handle and declared, and the fans continue to speculate about the reason behind the cancellation. This also comes in the backdrop of the WBA champion announcing his intention to retire by the end of 2025. Is there a link between the two? Whatever may be the case, De La Hoya, 51, has asked ‘Tank’ to give him a call.

His comment could be alluding to a fighter who would take the Davis fight on short notice and not hesitate to fight him. But who it could be? The Golden Boy stable has the likes of Daniel Luna, Oscar Duarte, and the future star William Zepeda. But you can’t expect the American promoter to feed Zepeda, 28, to Davis, which leaves the room open for speculation.

But if you are wondering why De La Hoya has offered Davis a fight with one of his boys, there can be a few reasons.

Firstly, De La Hoya admires “Tank.” In August, speaking on the Club Shay Shay YouTube channel, he praised Davis saying, “He’s a beast, pure and simple. The reason Tank is great is because he fights. He doesn’t just show up-he fights,” said De La Hoya“And when you fight, you’re going to get hit, maybe even knocked out. But that’s the beauty of Tank. He’s not scared of that. That’s why the fans love him. That’s why he’s a star.” Then there is the fact, that this could also be an attempt by him to lure the WBA lightweight champion to his promotion.

In June, he made it clear that Davis will always have the chance to fight for Golden Boy Promotions, tweeting, “Good luck to @Gervontaa. The door is always open at @GoldenBoyBoxing.” In response, he received a cheeky reply from the champion.

Is Gervonta Davis dodging Lamont Roach, or is there more to this fight cancellation saga?

Davis clapped back at De La Hoya’s offer tweeting, “Them kids still waiting for their money,” suggesting that there remain issues when it comes to paying fighters in the Golden Boy Promotions. Notably, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney claimed they did not receive the promised amounts from Golden Boy for their April 20 bout. Meanwhile, Roach and his team seemed oblivious to the fight likely being canceled.

Shortly after Davis’s story, Roach posted a workout video clip on Instagram, perhaps unaware of what was going on. His publicist Nilo Wright was asked whether they had been informed about a cancelation. “Nope, still preparing as planned for March 1st,” Wright answered. This fight had come under scrutiny since it was first announced. Many felt that with Davis being one of the top fighters, his going up against Roach was underwhelming.

While Roach is the Super Featherweight champion, he’s considered undersized for a clash with Davis, and the odds were heavily stacked against him. According to Box Line, there was a 91% chance of Davis winning, while Roach was given a 9% chance. But it seems the wishes of many fans have been realized with bout likely put on hold for at least now. This means fans may have to wait to see Davis in action, having last fought in June 2024,

But what about Roach, 29? In October, he not only talked about the bout with Davis but also confirmed a rematch clause.  “There’s a rematch clause, people. So get ready for two fights and after I beat him(Gervonta Davis) the 2nd time. I’ll ask the WBA to let me go up to 140 and fight Rayo [Valenzuela for his light Welterweight belt,” he said.

But now nothing seems to be certain. So how is Roach reacting to the news of the apparent cancelation of the fight?

Lamont Roach focused despite Gervonta Davis’ claims

The WBA super featherweight champion remained dismissive of the rumors and Davis’ comments. He opened up about the debacle on his social media handles. Roach admitted he was focused on the coming fight and was not paying heed to the outside noise. He wrote, “The f–k ya keep asking me for? He said that s–t not me. I’m locked in ain’t s–t changed.”

Meanwhile, Rick Glaser had painted the whole blame on the PBC and Al Haymon. He declared, “Tank Davis has announced on Social Media that his fight is off. Lets see where that goes from here, but we all know there’s issues with Al Haymon & PBC. It might be Tank is finally get smart to all the Haymon/PBC Bobaluba, & there’s a lot Bobaluba from Haymon/PBC! #Boxing.”

It remains to be seen whether the Davis vs. Roach fight goes ahead or not or whether the lightweight champion has set his eyes on someone else. The fans might remember how a couple of weeks ago the Baltimore native had a back-and-forth with Jake Paul. Can that be on the cards? The fans might like it, but you can’t bridge the weight gap between lightweight and cruiserweight, can you?
