Will PBC's $900 million debt sink Vergil Ortiz Jr.'s chances for a career-defining fight?

Who is next for Vergil Ortiz Jr.? The American fighter is set for a title fight or at least a big fight next, as he continues to rack up wins and shield his unblemished record. His promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, is also on a hunt for the perfect suitor. And there are two names that he has zeroed in on. But there is a twist. The promotion they are tied with, the PBC, is in a terrible state, according to certain voices.

Notably, Ortiz Jr., 26, is coming off a hard-fought controversial victory against Serhii Bohachuk and has collected the interim WBA super welterweight title as a reward. Interestingly, the WBA title now belongs to Terence Crawford. But the champion’s chances of giving Ortiz Jr., at 22-0, a fight are rather slim, as he fancies either a bout with Canelo Alvarez or a unification match.

That leaves the interim champion with some time to kill and for De La Hoya, the two realistic names that pop up are Jermell Charlo and Errol Spence Jr. The Golden Boy Promotions’ head turned to his X handle and wrote, “@TwinCharlo or @ErrolSpenceJr for @VergilOrtiz before PBC sinks for good.”

The PBC boasts of a star-studded stable, as they have the rights to both the Charlo twins, Spence Jr., and even David Benavidez. So, why is De La Hoya predicting a downfall for Al Haymon‘s promotion, which would jeopardize Ortiz Jr.’s fight with PBC stars? It has more to do with the PBC’s outstanding debt, which now reportedly stands at $900 million. And that’s not all.

PBC’s woes stand in between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya’s ambitions

Rick Glaser listed the details of the sensitivity of the PBC’s troubles. The boxing insider revealed that the PBC’s biggest lender was unable to pay their debt of $900 million. In addition, the PBC has an aging stable, with no young fighter in the ranks, other than Gervonta Davis who is 30 now, possessing the talent to become a star next. The number of PBC events has also gone down from once 40+ in a year to 8 in 2024.

And for his part, HE Turki Alalshikh recently dealt the deadly blow, as he has lowered the PPV prices, which makes PBC PPV events comparatively expensive and unrealistic to afford. This might lead to the PBC’s collapse and eventually disrupt Ortiz Jr. and De La Hoya’s fight plans.

Notably, Jermell Charlo is still out of action and might only make a return this coming January and could turn out to be a splendid fight if it is worked upon. Contrarily, Spence Jr. is in the mix with Sebastian Fundora and might not be available soon. So, if it’s a direct toss-up between the two, fans could soon see Ortiz Jr. and Charlo in a matchup.
