On July 24th The Golden Boy, a documentary on the Olympic gold medalist and former Welterweight and Super Welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya was released on HBO Max. Directed by Fernando Villena, the documentary titled after De La Hoya’s nickname looks forward to revealing the “lifelong demons“ the former boxer faced. In addition, the work promises to showcase the burden De La Hoya carried because of the nickname ‘Golden Boy’.
Recently, Stephen A. Smith interviewed De La Hoya. In his conversation with ‘Golden Boy’, Smith enquired why De La Hoya planned to release his documentary in 2023. In his response, De La Hoya stated that he wanted to free himself from an image people built of him.

Stephen A. Smith wanted to know if there was a particular reason why De La Hoya wanted to make and release his documentary in 2023. Certainly, one cannot help but wonder if De La Hoya wishes to ensure commercial gain by bringing light on himself and his promotion, Golden Boy Boxing. However, De La Hoya answered that the axe to grind in this documentary lay in freeing himself from ‘The Golden Boy Image’. “It was time to free myself from ‘The Golden Boy’. That image that people painted of me many years ago,” said De La Hoya.

De La Hoya admitted that he tackled “a lot of pressure” in his life because of the ‘Golden Boy’ title. However, the boxing ring has always been his escape. Inside the boxing ring, he discovered his happiness away from the world. “I must have been depressed ten times over. I must admit I had mental health issues over and over again. But that boxing ring was my escape,” said De La Hoya.

According to the CEO of Golden Boy Boxing, another reason he wanted to release his documentary now was that he desired people to know about his mother’s relationship with him too. “You gotta remember that I dedicated the gold medal to her in 1992. But was it all a lie? That’s what you’re gonna find out in the documentary,” he concluded. Anyway, why do you think he decided to make and release his documentary this year?
