Could the upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia fight week get any more heated? If Oscar De La Hoya has his way, absolutely. On ‘The MMA Hour,’ De La Hoya vowed not to hold back against his former protégé, Canelo Alvarez. Promising to unleash a verbal tirade like no other, the tensions are soon set to skyrocket.
Remember their falling out? Canelo once declared he had no interest in friendship with De La Hoya, severing ties with Golden Boy Promotions in a highly publicized split. As fight week approaches, how will these fiery exchanges shape the atmosphere? And just what does De La Hoya have planned?
Oscar De La Hoya is looking to out Canelo Alvarez
Oscar De La Hoya isn’t waiting for the first bell to start swinging. In his conversation with Ariel Helwani, De La Hoya laid out his plans for fight week, and they’re nothing short of incendiary. “Yeah, I’m just going to speak the truth right when I’m promoting this and on the podium. Look, I’m not going to hold back. I’m gonna go hard,” he declared, signaling a confrontational stance that will surely set sparks flying.
What exactly does “going hard” entail? De La Hoya let us know: “I’m going to talk sh*t like there’s no tomorrow. The sh*t that he’s talked about me, you know. I got all kinds of stuff, I got all kinds of stuff, fight week“
But why all the drama? It goes back to a specific moment that really set things off. De La Hoya mentioned how his suggestion that Canelo might benefit from a new trainer didn’t sit well—actually, it bombed. Canelo took it as a major slight, leading to a very public split. He’s been pretty clear since then, even saying in interviews that being friends with De La Hoya isn’t on his wishlist. But what does he think of the current state of his former marquee fighter?

Is Canelo Alvarez showing signs of decline? Oscar definitely thinks so.
De La Hoya foresees Munguia as the torchbearer against aging Canelo
Oscar De La Hoya isn’t shy about predicting big shifts in the boxing world. Chatting on The MMA Hour, he highlighted a potential seismic change in the super-middleweight hierarchy. “I think it could be the changing of the guards,” De La Hoya mused, pointing out the physical toll on Canelo Alvarez, “He’s had operations on his knees, on his shoulders. You can see the decline.”

He likened the upcoming bout to his own past clash with Julio Cesar Chavez, where he, the younger fighter, dominated. “Munguia is 27 years old. Canelo is 33. This could be De La Hoya and Chavez all over again. It happens in the sport all the time.”
Could May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena witness a new champion rise? Will we witness the torch being passed, or will Canelo Alvarez fend off the rise of the “young lions” and solidify his legacy further? What do you think?
