Former six-division champion and boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya is one of the few who have managed to carry on their success in the ring to become one of the best promoters in the sport right now. However, there are not many that have matched the ‘Golden Boy’ in every aspect of the sport apart from Floyd Mayweather. The two fighters were the faces of boxing for their generation and also competed once in the ring. Despite Mayweather getting the victory many thought it was a very close fight between two legends.
Moreover, it looks like their rivalry will be continuing indirectly as their proteges are now set to face each other in the ring. Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis will face each other this April after years of feuding with each other. The fight is touted to be one the biggest grudge matches in the sport with both fighters wanting to prove they are better. However, it looks like ‘Golden Boy’ wants to make things a little more interesting after he issued a challenge to Mayweather ahead of the fight.

In a recent interview with FightHype TV, the 50-year-old promoter was asked if Mayweather being in ‘Tank’s’ corner would benefit him against Garcia. De La Hoya agreed with the reporter but stated that he could help Garcia by being in his corner as well. He then suggested that the two former rivals now be corner men for their proteges who will also compete this April.
“Oh yeah just the way I gonna be useful to Ryan Garcia. You know Mayweather can be useful for Gerovnta Davis. Lets go” said De La Hoya.
This was not all as the reporter then asked if De La Hoya wanted to issue a change to Davis to bring Mayweather in his corner. However, the former six-division champion revealed why he would not tell ‘Tank’ to bring in his former mentor.

According to De La Hoya a fighter does not want to be told what he is doing while competing. He added that he himself did not like to be told what to do in the middle of fights. However, it could be interesting to see ‘Money’ in his corner.

“You know what I’ve learned over the years in boxing is that the fighter does his thing. You know if I was in their position I wouldn’t want anybody telling me what to do I know what to do you know. It would be interesting, it would be fun” he added
If Mayweather and Davis decide to work together on this fight it would certainly be a clash of generations. However, given the current relationship between the two after Davis’ departure from Mayweather Promotions, this does not seem likely to happen.
