Weeks after being named alongside Ryan Garcia in a lawsuit by Devin Haney, Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya replied and broke his silence on the matter. In September, Haney filed a lawsuit over the Garcia-Haney bout, fought in April this year. KingRy won that fight after knocking down ‘The Dream’ three times over 12 rounds. But things got messy when VADA revealed the presence of the banned substance Ostarine in Garcia’s system. This led the NYSAC to declare the fight a no-contest, resulting in Garcia being banned for a year and fined $1.2 million.

However, Devin Haney was not satisfied with the punishment meted out to Garcia. Therefore, he took legal action against Garcia by filing a lawsuit in New York, claiming damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. In addition, he also demanded a full accounting of the event from Golden Boy Promotion. Haney and his team contended that there was a lack of clarity in regard to the PPV profits as well as the cost of production of the event. This became ammo for Oscar De La Hoya who decided to speak on the issue during his weekly segment of Clapback Thursday.

In the clip posted to Instagram, De La Hoya asserted, “The Haneys also name my company Golden Boy Promotions in their case against Garcia because they want a full accounting of Devin’s fight against Ryan.” He stated that he could have shown the accounting books to Haneys without even the case since they were neighbors and he had nothing to hide. He went to reveal the shocking PPV buys for the Haney-Garcia fight.

“They want to see my books. They don’t believe the fact that Garcia-Haney only did a little over 300,000 homes and they have been paid what they are owed. They want more money that does not exist,” said De La Hoya. Before the fight, during an interview with FightHubTv, the Golden Boy Promotions’s head had predicted PPV sales of the fight to exceed 1.5 million homes. He had added that anything less than 500,000 would be a major setback.

But De La Hoya never exclusively shared the numbers after the event. Even Top Rank CEO Bob Arum had labeled the numbers as “very disappointing” but De La Hoya always maintained his silence. Now defending himself against the accusations from the Devin Haney camp, De La Hoya stated, “This fight just didn’t sell.”

This is the first time that De La Hoya has finally confessed that the Devin Haney-Ryan Garcia fight didn’t do well. Based on these numbers, according to him, the claims mentioned in the lawsuit do not stand. This became an opportunity for him to bash Devin Haney and his father Bill Haney for the suit.

Devin Haney unable to handle Ryan Garcia’s left hook

The 1992 Barcelona Olympic gold medalist implied that the accusation of battery against Garcia was completely baseless. “Your son is a professional fighter. His livelihood is based on battering other opponents. This is the lamest claim I have ever seen in the four decades I have been involved in this sport,” said De La Hoya. According to him, both fighters agreed to the fight and signed the contract. Hence, the accusation of battery makes no sense.

The Los Angeles native further defended Garcia’s win against Haney. He noted, “The traces of Ostarine were so minute that professionals have said that it didn’t make any difference,” before stating that Haney just could not handle Garcia’s left hook. Even Garcia’s team has always claimed that the low amount of Ostarine was because of contamination denying any type of wrongdoing on their part.

Regardless of Oscar De La Hoya’s defense, Devin Haney and his team remain committed to their lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions. Only time will tell who the courts side with. For now, what can be said is there is more to come on the Devin Haney- Ryan Garcia saga.
