Oscar De La Hoya has hinted at a future match between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. This news ignited a buzz among boxing enthusiasts, especially on social media platforms. After a tough loss to Gervonta Davis last April, Garcia made a strong comeback in December 2023. He showcased his prowess against Oscar Duarte, sealing the match with a knockout in the eighth round. Meanwhile, Haney, at 25, made headlines by becoming a two-weight world champion.
His recent win over Regis Prograis by unanimous decision further solidified his undefeated streak, now standing at 31-0. Interestingly, Garcia has been hanging out with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, hinting at a potential collaboration. However, contrary to expectations, Oscar De La Hoya is not too opposed to the idea and even gave his blessings to Garcia. So what did De La Hoya say to his star fighter?

Oscar De La Hoya dispenses useful advice to Garcia
The rivalry between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather is well known. The two even fought before, and after transitioning from ring to being a promoter, the beef between the two continued. Thus Garcia’s recent actions of hanging around Mayweather can be seen as something that would hurt De La Hoya’s feelings.

However, De La Hoya took to Instagram to prove otherwise. In his latest Instagram story, he advised Garcia to learn from the best. He wrote, “Hope @kingryan soaks up as much as possible about defense from @floydmayweather In the meantime check out my man @vergilortiz try and keep his KO streak alive this Saturday on @daznboxing”.
He even plugged Vergil Ortiz Jr. who is soon going to fight against Fredrick Lawson in Virgin Hotels, Las Vegas. This message is somewhat different from his recent statement where he questioned Mayweather’s motive of hanging around a fighter of another promotion.
De La Hoya questions Floyd Mayweather’s motives
Young boxing sensation Ryan Garcia was seen training alongside Floyd Mayweather Jr., sparking conversations in the boxing community. While the interaction appeared benign, Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter at Golden Boy Promotions, has reservations.
‘The Golden Boy’ remarked, “If Floyd Mayweather Jr. is actively promoting…that was conflict of interest!” He expressed concerns about Mayweather’s dual role, fearing that promoters might sway fighters from their stables.

Despite these tensions, De La Hoya remains cautious in addressing Garcia’s association with Mayweather. He acknowledges the benefits, stating, “A young kid who can be amongst greats is always a positive for me.” However, he still remains a bit apprehensive about the two getting together.
