There are very few fights that have captured the fans’ imagination, such as Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez. While there are clouds of doubt hovering over the potential fight, alternative options are always there for the Omaha native. But he doesn’t like them. He is fixated on the Mexican champion, and if Oscar De La Hoya is to be believed, it is misplaced.
Crawford, 36, has been chasing a legacy fight since finishing Errol Spence Jr., and the man who fit the bill was Alvarez, 34. However, the super middleweight champion’s reluctance to work around his fight with Edgar Berlanga threw the hypothetical fight into the bin, and it seems the relationship between him and HE Turki Alalshikh has taken a hit. So, where does it leave ‘Bud’? Does that mean he should not fight anymore? The Golden Boy Promotion lynchpin doesn’t believe so.
When asked about Crawford, 41-0, and his obsession with Alvarez, De La Hoya told Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay podcast that he was wrong. The 51-year-old promoter declared, “I think he’s wrong. I really do think he’s wrong. Crawford is in a unique position, situation. He needs a B-side to create a mega-fight. He’s that type of fighter.”

“He’s the best talent out there in the world today. I think, pound-for-pound. But he’s kind of like in a teeter-totter where it’s like, does he sell or does he sell? It all depends on the opponent,” the Golden Boy added as he explained the value of alternatives such as ‘The Truth’ and Vergil Ortiz Jr., who could help Crawford stag PPV blockbuster fights. So, will the Omaha native make peace with the fight?
Terence Crawford hints at retirement
The WBA super welterweight champion only wants Alvarez, and in case he doesn’t have his dream fight fulfilled, he could hang up his gloves. HE Turki Alalshikh told Charlie Parsons on his X-spaces conversation. The Saudi adviser added, “I don’t think Crawford will fight anyone but Canelo (Alvarez). This is my opinion. We give (Crawford) offer for Ortiz. I don’t think he will take it. He only wants Canelo.”
While Crawford is coming off a win against Israil Madrimov, he is not sure whom he will fight next. He could go up against Sebastian Fundora, collecting the WBO and the WBA straps, and become the undisputed champion in a third division. But he will await a legacy fight, and he will hope that it comes from Alvarez.
