Teofimo Lopez made headlines on June 10, not just for clinching the WBO super lightweight title, but for the unexpected announcement he made after defeating Josh Taylor. In a surprising move, the 25-year-old declared his intention to retire from boxing, a decision he reiterated in the days following his victory.

However, he has been going back and forth about this. On multiple occasions, he has hinted at coming back to the ring, naming fighters he wants to fight and the money he wants to make. Eddie Hearn has had his share of dealing with unreasonable fighters. In a recent interview, has explained why business with Lopez might be tiresome.

Why does Eddie Hearn sympathize with Bob Arum?

While speaking to FightHype about Lopez being a free agent, Hearn expressed frustration with the challenges of negotiating boxing contracts. While he thought boxing needed the likes of Lopez, he also had a contrasting argument. Promoters often have to deal with fighters who may not have a realistic understanding of the financial aspects of a fight. “One of the problems with boxing is fighters have no idea of the commercial revenue,” said Hearn. In particular, he mentioned a scenario.

“At a moment where I’m negotiating fights, and I’m like say I’m offering someone 2 million. They’re telling me they should be getting 10 and it’s like- no no, let me walk you through the budget for this fight.” Few fighters make demands without any strong reasoning behind them. Hearn believes Lopez falls into this category of boxers “Teofimo is one of those guys”. This is why he expressed empathy for figures like Bob Arum who have to navigate such situations in the boxing industry. Why did Hearn unleash this attack on Lopez?

What is Teofimo Lopez’s stand on the business of boxing?

Recognized for his ring prowess, Lopez’s recent foray into social media advice has intrigued fans and fellow boxers. His tweet was a departure from the usual post-fight banter. In a surprising message after retirement, Lopez advised fighters not to repeat the mistakes of combat legends, urging them to utilize their brand and venture beyond their comfort zones for genuine financial success.

Lopez also showcased a strong commitment to justice. He openly criticized the management of revenues in boxing, particularly controlled by promoters. He is just as frustrated as Hearn but for different reasons. The unfair financial burden placed on hard-working athletes troubles Lopez. This outcry is not isolated, as Lopez has consistently voiced concerns since his controversial departure from the Rio Olympics in 2016, where he questioned boxing authorities’ integrity. His ongoing efforts underscore a dedication to reforming and improving the sport he deeply cares about.
