Nine months ago, GQ sent the boxing world down a spiral when they conducted a one-on-one interview with Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney ahead of their April 20, 2024 clash. Fans saw the two bitter childhood rivals together and the hype of the match was increased tenfold. However, what many fans didn’t realize at the time and were still oblivious of the fact was that the duo refused to sit together. So, GQ Sports decided to be creative and conducted separate interviews and then clip them together later, something they explicitly mentioned at the start of the video as well.

With the Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney rematch talks picking up steam, fans decided to revisit the video. However, as the video started going viral again, one user on ‘X’ left the fans shellshocked by bursting their bubble.

Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney: Rivals since the start

A few days ago, the ‘X’ page Source Of Boxing shared a snippet from the viral GQ sports video. The 9-month-old video featured Garcia and Haney discussing their rivalry since their amateur days, their upcoming match, and the bad blood between them. Considering everything that has happened since their fight, the relationship has only soured.

After the fight, the Victorville native was found positive for Ostarine, a PED, resulting in a one-year ban from boxing by the NYSAC. ‘The Dream’ took it forward and filed a lawsuit against Garcia seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. However, things have taken a turn for the better in the last few weeks as His Excellency Turki Alalshikh is now orchestrating a rematch.

According to reports, Garcia and Haney’s comeback bouts have now been finalized for May. The duo will make their comeback on the same card in May 2025. While Garcia will face Rolando Romero, ‘The Dream’ will make his comeback against Jose Ramirez. The rematch between the duo will take place at Times Square in New York in October only if they win their respective comeback fights. Otherwise, HE Alalshikh will drop the rematch plans as it will lose its charm. With the talks of the rematch progressing slightly, the GQ video once again started attracting fans.

However, another prominent ‘X’ user and boxing analyst, Rob-BoxingShrew, quoted the video and revealed that it was a fake. He wrote, “People don’t realise they were never in the same room for this interview 😂 they just pieced it together brilliantly for this moment.” Even though GQ had cleared the same fact at the start of the video, it looked like many fans were unaware of it.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the fake GQ interview ruin the Garcia-Haney rivalry for you, or add more drama?

Have an interesting take?

The revelation surprised fans, as they couldn’t believe it, leading them to express their shock in comments without any filter.

Distressed and Disheartened

A user, who was definitely a fan of the video, wrote, “Ruined my day this has,” claiming that the revelation had ruined one of his favorite moments in boxing. Another user who had no idea about the video being fake before the tweet wrote, “Hahaha f**k I legit had no idea lol,” expressing his disbelief.

Another user who found the video hilarious and iconic wrote, “You’ve ruined the greatest boxing moment of last year there 🤣.” Well, considering everything that has gone down between Haney and Garcia since, it won’t be wrong to say an actual one-on-one interview would have broken the internet.

Another fan wrote, “I always thought it was funny how ridiculous Ryan was acting and how ridiculous Devin was dressed lol.” He claimed that even though he found something odd about the video, he would not have guessed GQ clipped it together. In the video, Ryan Garcia was in his usual avatar, having fun and dancing on his own beat. On the other hand, Devin Haney was serious and was even complaining about how ‘KingRy’ wasn’t taking the fight seriously.

Amidst the chaos, a user compared the video to the iconic Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Louis Vuitton campaign. He wrote, “A bit like CR and Messi for the chess game?” referring to the iconic picture ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Clicked by celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, the LV campaign picture included the two best footballers playing chess together. LV later revealed that it was a composite of two separate images and the duo was not in the same room together.

Even that revelation was quite shocking and disappointing for the fans, similar to the reaction to Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney’s GQ interview. However, we have seen Messi and Ronaldo sharing the screen multiple times since then. Will we see the boxing rivals doing that? Only time will tell.
